If I used a coffee cup to eat soup out of and then poured the soup all over a sea bass it wouldn't mutate it would possibly get burnt but it wouldn't mutate. If there were cigarette butts in the dirty monkeys coffee cup then that would be a different matter.

It's all about the CUPS!!!

Therefore, because of and so forth I have no idea what I'm talking about...
If it makes any difference, I could put the sea bass in a kettle.

I think it is just attention.
Any kind of attention is better than no attention.
For some people the occasional upvote is enough attention. Others need not only upvotes but also replies to their posts. This is just a threshold thing. One just does not feel the attention unless it reaches a certain level. This is the same with kids. If they can not satisfy their need in positive attention, they do something to get negative attention, because that is still better than no attention at all.
Maybe for the newbees we should give more positive attention in replies to their posts, even if it does not worth an upvote, so they wont feel neglected.
