A mythical and ghostly creature has appeared in the wilds of the Scottish Highlands. A rare white stag, from the red deer species, is believed to be among just a tiny handful living in Britain, according to a conservation group. White stags are seen as a magical and powerful force in many mythologies and the John Muir Trust is now keeping the stag's location secret for fear of poachers.

This reminds me of the white deer that was around the San Diego Mission (the old one) for a while, but got hit by a car.

It should be culled, either by predators, or hunters.
Nature didn't do it any favors by coloring it different, it lacks the natural camoflauge that its relatives have.
Also, with recessive genes, comes a host of other problems.
I could tell you about lethal white foals,White Tigers deafness in white bull terriers and boxers. (I realize there are more white related animal issues..just naming a few)
There can be congenital things he can pass on, other that just his pretty coat.

There can be congenital things he can pass on, other that just his pretty coat. So, you're saying the animal should be killed for the sake of cleansing the wild deer gene pool?
If we were talking about a domesticated animal which was being bred for some specific purpose (such as food or labor), I could see removing this animal from the list of potential breeders in order to avoid any associated congenital defects. However, since this abnormality has occurred in nature, has no adverse effect on the usefulness of the animal (since, being wild, it's not really all that useful to anyone), and doesn't really effect humans in any way--other than to make a certain number of them say, "oh, look! pretty!"--I see no reason that this animal should be killed.

My original comment (#4 above) was prompted by having grown up surrounded by people who thought they proved their manhood by shooting animals. My take on it is this: if you go into the woods with a knife and come out with a deer, you are a hunter. If you go into the woods with a gun and come out with a deer, you are a cheater.

Vegetarian? Not at all. I find many different animals to be extremely tasty, and am quite comfortable with the fact that they have to be killed so that I can eat them.
I am not opposed to hunting. If someone wants to go into the woods and kill a deer for the sake of helping to feed their family and friends, so be it. I am, however, annoyed with the hubris inherent in "trophy hunting", or hunting for the sole purpose of displaying and/or bragging about the animal you killed. I feel that the use of a gun (and at this point a modern bow), scent maskers, tree stands, camouflage, etc., added to our giant human brains gives the hunter such an enormous advantage over the animal being hunted that there is no real "sport" to hunting. To me, trophy hunting is the equivalent of an adult beating a four year old in chess and bragging about it.
I also used to know guys when I was younger who would take a shotgun into the woods and shoot whatever moved, just for the sake of having killed some animals. And that's firmly in the territory of "proving your manhood by shooting some animals."
So, no I'm not opposed to hunting or (as you asked) killing animals for food. I'm just opposed to killing animals for the sake of bragging rights.
