Goldfish three-second memory myth busted
Goldfish three-second memory myth busted
There is a popular belief that goldfish only have a three-second memory span and every lap of their fishbowl is like seeing the world for the first time. But a 15-year-old schoolboy from Adelaide has just debunked that theory. He has conducted a simple experiment, which proves that the humble goldfish is smarter than we think. picked by AutumnLotus 11 months ago

I always thought that was a ridiculous myth. How would you even detect a 3 second memory as distinct from "no memory". A goldfish is actually a fairly complex creature - it has a CNS, which suggests some form of memory.

Old news... I disproved this one myself back in fourth grade for extra credit.
But hey, Adelaide! I had a cousin there, once.
Nice place.

I'm sure it's been done before, and I'm sure none of us really expected fish to have such a short memory.

But it's a cool story, with a cool experiment, nonetheless.

If only he had spent more time wasting his life on the internet he wouldn't have had to spend time wasting his life on redundant experiments.

This wouldn't work with the supposed short term fish memory:

There was a mythbusters episode on this a long time ago. They disproved it a year or two ago, and I bet they weren't the first.
