The Photo That Proves The Cliche, "A Picture Is Worth A 1000 Words" Posted: 10 months ago by 2manyusernames
This is just a single image along with some background info, but I felt it is powerful enough and news worthy enough to warrant it's own posting.

That is a very moving image. I would love to know the details behind it.

It is quite moving, yet part of me wonders if it was staged.

It's a moving image, no doubt.

The story behind it is of a group called "The Landless Rural Workers Movement".

These protestors raid large corporations, and vandalize and loot property as a form of protest.

There are an estimated 1.5 million members of this growing Brazilian group, who are protesting the fact that 3% of the population owns 2/3 of all arable land in the country.

The MST identifies what it believes to be unproductive rural land that does not meet its social function and occupies it.

The Brazilian constitution does specify that land must serve a proper social function.

In some cases, the courts have permitted the group to remain on the land, and in other cases they have been evicted.

It's a really great photo, but the paragraph underneath is just ridiculous.

And I quote:
"In such circumstances do we need to know the details of the dispute to have any doubts that what we are witnessing is wrong?"

Well, yes.

Based on the italicized description of the photo, it seems you could accurately reword what's happening here as "A squatter/trespasser is being pushed from private land by Amazonas state policemen who have heavily protected themselves against the squatters' attacks."

Just because she's crying and has a baby with her doesn't mean she's not a thief.

Even if she is a thief I doubt she could take as much as any of those in the police line or whoever pays them.

There are thieves on both sides of the law. Learn the difference between the bum on the skids and the bum on the plush. Ken Lay stole more than almost anyone could and he was never treated that way.

If you went home today and found 300 people living in your front and back yards, and they were going to the bathroom on your front steps, you would probably want them to leave, and force may be needed. That's what this photo is about it.

Ugh. Just because you see something in a photograph and feel bad about what you are seeing, doesn't actually mean you care.
David,

You have done it again. That is one of the most powerful photos I have ever seen.

Do you know what happened to mother and child? Is there anyway I can help?

~Brandon
Yes, Brandon, you can do something! They would like to come live in your house, eat your food, and go to the doctor at your expense. If your still interested you need to come to Brazil to escort them back to your country. You may also need to marry the woman and adopt the child to make them citizens. Oh, and she just found out she is pregnant! God bless you for being a caring person.

Brandon-- "Oh.. Um, I was thinking maybe I could just send some canned goods, and some old clothes that I have shoved in the back of my closet that I haven worn in years."

If only there were more people, like Brandon, who really care.

Also, btw.. If the police are trying to move you, and you use your child as a "You can't touch me now" to try to get them to stop, you are the bad guy, not them.

If you meant the pulitzer winning one is technically better than I agree, I can't say I like the composition/lighting of the brazilian one.
