She was under 18...I could see how the Gallery was a little worried about it. I'm not saying it was right to award her and then take it away but I can see how it's a touchy subject.

.... yeah, because 17-year-old females should have no experience with a nude female body??

Do these ignorant prudes think that full-length mirrors should be banned from homes because - gasp - these minors might see a nude (oh my god! It's my own nude body!! I'm scarred! Call the shrinks!!)???

I really like her piece, too.

I guess I kinda understand, because it wasn't just a nude painting, it was a nude self-portrait of a 17 year old.

Granted, I think it's ridiculous that she didn't win first place for that...but, I can definitely see where he's coming from.

any artist who does something involving nudes at my college automatically gets an A. it's an exploration that takes a lot of guts to do. whether it's reinterpreting your own nude body, or asking someone to pose for you, it's a really difficult thing to do. it's even gutsier showing it to a lot of people knowing they are judging it. i shied away from doing a gallery show because it's uncomfortable to show any of my work. art is extremely personal.

The gallery didn't object to the work in question, it's still displayed there. The news paper that organises the contest objects.

And it's not like they're just worried that someone might see a nude painting of a 17 year old girl. They also objected to a sculpture of a pregnant woman, just because it depicted nudity.

I get the feeling that someone high in the paper's hierarchy is seriously repressed sexually.

Holy crap, have we become so up-tight and prudish as a society that the artistic interpretation of a teenage girl is so damn offensive?

Did I fall asleep and wake up in Victorian times?!

I may be wrong here but it's not like she's a frickin kid! Even then it's the human body not an horrific, rude thing to be kept under wraps at all costs.

I've seen 14,15,16 year-old girls walking round in clothing thats far more provocative and inappropriate than if they were walking round naked, IMO

You know, her work reminds me of the paleolithic fertility sculptures found all over the world.

I really don't see what the big deal is about. I bet you one thing that the people that awarded her and took it away were a bunch of people who are not comfortable in their own skin and don't get laid very much. People like that should really get out of the business being art handlers, judges for art contest and/or anything similar.
