Where have all the real men gone?
Where have all the real men gone?
Top American columnist Kathleen Parker is causing a furor with her new book "Save the Males", in which she argues that feminism has neutered men and deprived them of their noble, protective role in society.

Personally I do think chivalry is dead because of it. picked by bingo 4 months ago

I think sometimes polite actions like opening a door or holding it open or giving up your seat are seen as trying to say that women need preferential treatment like they're weaker somehow and I think that's a real shame.
I think it's a real shame too.
Some women (younger especially) think it is because men think they are not capable.
I choose to think it is sign of reverence and respect.

I think women's lib smurfed up a lot of stuff.

Where have all the real ladies gone?

My generation is split equally in two.

People who might make good citizens.
People who ought to have been decapitated at birth.

A surprising number of the latter are 16 yo. girls whose sole priority is to get good and drunk and have unprotected sex with their 28 year old boy friend.

Why the f**k would I be chivalrous for some skank who'll offer only syphillis in return? You wouldn't get a 'thank you' if you rescued their illegitimate child from a burning lake.

I try to be polite, in general, to everyone.
But I get sick and tired of being treated with suspicion by old ladies simply because I didn't f**king mug them.

Add: I remembered a passage that demonstrates my point perfectly...

J. K. Rowling's 'Harry Potter and The Half Blood Prince'

'Good evening, Amycus,' said Dumbledore calmly, as though welcoming the man to a tea party. 'And you've brought Alecto too... charming...'
The woman gave an angry little titter.
'Think your jokes'll help you on your deathbed, then?' she jeered.
'Jokes? No, no, these are manners,' replied Dumbledore

If you were only being polite on the hopes of getting a piece of undiseased ass, or for the hopes of a thanks; you were doing it wrong in the first place.

I'd triple upvote this if I could.

Manners have nothing to do with an expectation of reward, or even of civil treatment in return. Manners are MY representation. MY public face, that says I respect MYSELF enough to not behave like an ass. Polite language is part of it, thank you and you're welcome are part of it, appropriate dress for the situations, appropriate conversation topics--all these things bespeak manners. Social skills that are used to represent myself in a way that I am comfortable with and creates a comfortable atmosphere for those around me.

Why on earth would you expect a man to act like a gentlemen if ...

a. you are displaying cleavage deeper than the grand canyon for him to gaze upon.
b. your jeans are so tight all he can think is assassASS!
c. your first or 115th date consists of shots of tequila and a public discussion of your gag reflex.
d. your idea of polite conversation is not to use the f word.

Now back to the article...I blame feminism. It is a lie, we cannot have every thing.

While conduct may make the lady (and though I don't agree with statements 1 & 2 because I don't feel appearance should matter in any way) all the things you listed should be inconsequential to a true gentleman.

I think the point is that expecting someone to be like a gentleman when you yourself behave like a whore is ridiculous.

Everyone learns based on the reinforcement they receive. If being an ass is rewarded, the behavior will continue. When people--and I do mean both genders here--expect to be treated in a certain way and avoid contact with those who fail to do so, I think manners will improve.

Blaming feminism for destroying the Real Man just goes to show, how equality between the sexes is still far off from being accepted. I myself dont find it surprising, that as equality between the sexes has been the norm for not even a century, that the role of men (and the role of women) has not been found and established as of yet. Old roles and statuses have been shaken, and the dust hasn't even had time to land when we are demanding for the old, safe roles back as this is just too darn difficult.

I do believe that there are natural differences between men and women that cannot be ignored, and I am in no way "waiting for men to start lactating" or hoping to grow a penis for myself.
I also find it delightful if a man opens a door for me, but I also see no reason why I couldnt return the favor by laying my jacket down on a puddle and let him walk over it. Depending on the jacket, obviously. And his shoes. And if he's ... Well, you get the point.

Let's just give it time, ok? It'll even out.

(End note: when using the term "feminism" i use it to the definition found in www.dictionary.com

"Belief in the social, political, and economic equality of the sexes."

I do not believe women are superior to men or that they should be. The same goes for men, though.)

(I also don't think that for men and women to be equal, they have to be the same. The key word is balance. Don't even get me started on the Superwoman Myth, as it just irks me to no end.)

I totally agree with you. I wish I could upvote you more.

Especially the Hollywood/feminism part.

Look at Hollywood when our parents were kids. Wow, you can actually take your kids to a movie and not worry that perhaps you made a mistake halfway thru it and there is sex, nudity, or drugs involved in it. I kind of fear renting movies anymore. I do watch the ratings, but they are still over the top for what we are teaching our kids.

Hollywood back in the day was totally classy. Now, not so much.

Feminism. Although I feel we are entitled to the same pay and benefits as those sporting a pair of testicles, call me old fashioned, but I feel that women should be WOMEN.

Many women I know do not cook, know HOW to cook and spend more time away from their families than they really have to.

Women have their place in the military, police and fire jobs, but there are some jobs I feel they should not do.

I don't think they should be in the front lines in war.

I don't think they should be beat cops, (they have their place in sting operations)....and I don't think they should be going into houses to carry people out.

I am an Amazon....tall and strong...but I do not have the strength and stamina that a man has. Period.

« lynxears : Depending on the situation, it can drive me crazy when a guy holds the door open for me. If it's just the natural progression, he is there first, and holds it, totally fine. If I'm holding it and he balks at the doorway to take the door away from me, holding us both up, it drives me crazy.
I don't know how many times I get to the door first hold the door open for whoever's behind me and then experience the same thing doggy experience. I hate being mocked (by women) for doing something out of good manners.

I imagine her book is mostly trash written to appeal to single women looking for confirmation that it isn't their fault they can't find a decent man.

What it comes down to is class, some guys have it and some guys don't. Same with girls.

When a girl yells at you for opening a door for her it is because she has no class, don't let it bother you.

« coldbladed : Feminism is …
Funny, but I fancy neither of them. Maybe a little in between (leaning towards the 1st one but without the 'stach, it reminds me too much of my dad and that's yucky).

But you know what? Most girls who think they like the second one, would be like:

Girl: "Err... so, what would you like to do to me other than take me for a stroll among the tall and green trees of 'Whattever-the-f**k-these-woods're-called'?"
Elf (in wimpy voice): "We shall gather wild flowers from the meadows and with them I shall make a crown for you and..."
Girl: "Well, how about we do something else?"
Elf (innocently): "Like what, my lady?"
Girl: "...something else."
Elf: "Well... then I shall write a poem to your beauty and sing it to the winds so all in the land will kno..."
Girl (leaving): "Hey, where the hell can I find a MAN here?"
*Human warrior appears, spitting on the ground and scratching his ass. Girl hops towards him*
Girl (batting her eyelashes and smiling) "Hey..."
Man (smirking): "Hey there little lady"
Girl: “Want to treat me to a nice dinner at that fancy inn by the road?”
Man: “How about a mug of hale at the Prancing Pony?”
Girl (shrugging): “Fair enough”
Elf (allarmed): “But, my lady! I will sing an ode to you, cover your bed with rose petals and worship you respectfully…!”
Girl: “Dude… you might look good in my imagination, but men are built like this *points at human* for a reason. Now, go find yourself a unicorn and play horsey for a while, ok? B-bye now…”

What kind of chick gets pissy when you open a door? Seriously though, I apologize for the retarded femanazis out there, please don't stop being polite because of women like them.

Holding doors open is not necessary by any stretch of the imagination, but it is a very nice gesture that I would hate to see extinguished.
