Since I work for AT&T, I get the employee discount....so I'm no help there.
My one word of advice, if you get the pay-as-you-go plan...find out how often you have to make a payment or add minutes to your phone before they keep your unused money and change your phone number.
My in-laws did the pay as you go thing and didn't use it for over a month. They lost their $40 AND they had to change phone numbers.
«gnikgnok : I am now so good at bullying the customer service reps
As a customer service rep, I must say: Foul. You don't have to bully us; we honestly don't care if you pay or how much you pay. Just tell us straight-up what you want and be polite and friendly. At my job, I have the ability to royally screw people over (garnish wages, take taxes, etc) but I also have the ability to keep that from happening, and even make monthly payments be $0. It all depends on if you're civil or not.
Plime is a pliable tree of interesting links, cultivated and pruned by everyone. Be sure to read the FAQs, they can be found below among the links to the other categories.

*hangs head
Formally chastened. I will repent and be nicer to the stupid bubbleheads that always pick up when I call and can't get it through their big dumb dummyheads that I didn't sign up for those 17 add-on services that I've never heard of and have never used.
Man, I would hate to work in a call center... having to deal with b***hes like me all day. Ohhh... thread idea!
I had Sprint for a while. The instore guy completely lied to me--I was getting ready to move and was assured that they had good service in the area I was moving to. Wrong! 10 miles from where I moved, sure, but here? Not a chance. I called, spent over an hour with tech support, and they very helpfully checked everything, determined there was nothing they could do and let me out of the contract with no fee. Even refunded a portion of the monthly bill.
Now I have Verizon, and I'm not overly unhappy with it. I'd be happier with a cheaper plan, but I won't complain.
One thing to check is to see if your employer offers any sort of a discount with any of the providers. I get 20% off through my work.
