It's simple physics: For every doubling of speed of your car, you need FOUR times more energy.

A little slowdown thus saves alot of energy.

It's interesting that there's a question mark in the title of this post. For those too young to remember, the principal reason why highway speed limits were 55 mph for at least a couple of decades (in the U.S.) is because of the oil shortages of the 1970s. Praises for the savings in energy were sung from coast to coast in all mass-media for several years.

I'm sorry but I don't buy into their figures. Sure, more speed causes more drag, but I don't believe every 10 mph faster means 4 mpg less.

I've got a sports sedan that can measure real time and average mpg. On interstate trips of roughly 200 miles, I average about 26-28 mpg. It doesn't matter if I'm doing 60 or 90 mph, it doesn't change that much. Certainly not 12 mpg. More like 2-4 mpg.

This is all well and good, but have you tried driving 60mph on the highway when the speed limit is 75mph and the average motorist is driving 80+mph? That's just begging for an accident/road rage-related homicide.

Saskatchewan has the easiest solution to this problem.

Neglect the roads and highways, sorry, "dust-free surfaces," and it'll be too damn scary to drive over 90kph. Good fuel effiency and all the rest, just make sure you can change a tire, eh?
