The EVIL that is Pay Pal

I posted this over at worth but because some people don't visit both sites and I'm angry and I'd like to know if anyone else has had this issue, I'm posting here too:

I've heard others complain about them, their fees, etc. I've had a Pay Pal account for a long time, never had any problem with them, had nice smooth transactions, bought and sold stuff with ease. I haven't sold anything in over a year but never had any complaints, no chargebacks, no disputes, in fact, got awesome feedback on e-bay. And the reverse is true also.

It starts with my move, I cannot update my address or phone number on there site. They send a letter with a code to my old address (which never gets forwarded to my new address). Nevertheless, I am able to continue using Pay Pal to make purchases which is nice since I'm in a rural area now and do a lot of online purchases.

Then they put restrictions on my account. I finally get someone to deal with my address change but afterwards they not only refuse to remove the restrictions they are closing my account due to "high risk activity". HUH? So I ask what that activity is. They claim (at first) that it has to do the things I've sold. I sold some clothing and I think an old pen tablet and as I said, the transactions were smooth, great feedback, blah, blah. When I tell them this they then decide it's because of the items I've purchased recently. My last purchase was a CD of by a street performer someone posted a link to on Plime. A $15 CD, I think the guy is in Italy, not sure. They tell me I purchased some items in September (and while on the phone I couldn't remember what, but now recall it was off ebay and it was a remote control for my camera and some lens thing, maybe a $30 transaction, the guy I purchased from was in Poland but had an ebay account and I transacted through that). In any event, this seems "high risk" to them (although their recorded hold chatter repeatedly says "why not purchase from global vendors...blah, blah" so it would be remarkable if it's because these two purchases were made out of country that they now consider me high risk). They will not give me specifics on how any of those purchases are high risk and furthermore will not allow me to appeal this. And in order to get any further information they said I have to Subpoeana the information. WHAT???

I'm furious. I don't care a wit about Pay Pal or having an account with them, they can kiss my lily-white buttocks. BUT I am so offended they are making this accusation of risk, based on NOTHING and then not providing a rationale or further information without me having to hire an attorney and filing a suit. I'll investigate if this falls under the parameters of FOIA but I suspect that's only government agencies not corporations. I fully read their user agreement. I have not violated any of their rules, and nowhere does it say they can just arbitrarily close your account. Their whole premise is to act as an agent for the exchange of money for goods of some sort, which is exactly how I used them. My purchases have all been for either computer, clothing, and camera equipment. WTF?

I'm curious if anyone else has had to deal with anything like this from them.

That sucks dolly. I've used paypal only once and only for making a payment for my one and only ebay purchase. I've always been suspicious of Paypal and all the other horror stories I've heard just made me more hesitant to use them. Now I know I'll never use them.

Sorry about your paypal problems, dolly. Unfortunately they are the biggest so at some point in life you'll have to deal with them again...

The only problem I have is that they won't let me update my account information so I have to re-enter my new card # every time. Not a big deal, but still annoying.

I have had a Paypal account for many, many years now but have only used it maybe two or three times for eBay purchases. I have read too many horror stories about them that I don't use it unless I must. I even stopped using eBay due to being constantly "sniped". I think PayPal is overrated. There are many other ways to make your purchase and they seem to have fallen behind the times in security and reliability.

I've started to get a little suspicious of online companies lately. I mean, they make it so hard to contact anybody. If you have a problem, you must send an electronice email or some such. Phone numbers are hard to find and if you do find one, you have to wait a looong time.

But, I've never had troubles with Paypal. Sorry! I wish you luck.

I buy stuff (like my fakey fake gary fong lightsphere) from Hong Kong all the time, I wonder if I'm high risk. Most people on another photography forum I post on REALLY dig googlecheckout. Yeah PP sux but if you want to sell on Ebay just taaking MO ain't really practical.

Yep and now I'm banned from using them for no good reason. How will I buy Worth credits (it's not like I'll win them)? I'll have to see if w2k will use google checkout instead or in addition.

Ebay, and Paypal (they are one and the same), were the main company that lobbied to have the online poker made illegal last year.

I hate them with a passion. Now I've had to come up with other seedy activities to pass the time.

While I'm not defending Paypal, I don't think that everything their competitors says is the truth either. Sorry, but that website has too many emotionally charged words, extraneous exclamation marks and no reason for me to believe they are reliable or 'real' either.

It's not the only site and there's a link to the law firm handling a class-action law suit against Pay Pal. I didn't read every one of the issues posted, I'm sure there's some legit complaints and some bogus stuff. I don't know if the CA suit is still active or what the outcome was, I sent an email to the firm requesting the information.

I'm in pit-bull mode (sorry TM, not trying to disparage the pups) but I'm too pissed off to let this go, so I sent an email to the NY AG and my next one is the CA AG (though, I'm willing to bet they could care less with the fires going on and I can't blame them). Eventually, I'll make some noise on a level that I'm satisfied with.
