On the docket were 2 felony cases and 2 misdemeanor cases. The jury panel for the felony cases required 40 people (to pick a 12 person jury). The jury panel for the misdemeanor cases required 20 people (to pick a 6 person jury).

For those of you with limited math skills, that means they needed to pick 120 people for the 4 jury panels and 130 people would go home.

The County Clerk got up and started calling names for the first Felony case. She called 40 names. Mine was not one of them. She told them to take a 15 minute break and go upstairs to courtroom "3A" as their trial was starting at 9:00 AM.

Then the Count Clerk started calling names for the second Felony case. She called another 40 names. Again, mine was not one of them. She told them to take a 15 minute break and go upstairs to courtroom "3B" as their trial was starting at 9:00 AM.

She began calling names for the first misdemeanor case. She called 20 names. Nope...I'm not one of them. She told them to take a 20 minute break and go downstairs to courtroom "1A" as their trial was starting at 9:30.

So, they needed 20 more names and there was 150 people left.

She called 16 names. The 17th was mine. I was picked for the second misdemeanor case. She told us to come back at 2:00 PM.

WHAT? It was 8:50 AM! I live on the edge of the county and my drive was about 40 minutes one way!

Well, I have a brother that lives close by. So I call him to see if he wanted to do lunch. He does, but I've got to keep myself entertained until noon. (He's at work)

So, I meander around the mall until close to noon, head over to his work, and we do lunch.

I'm back at the courthouse around 1:30 and read my book. Everyone is there at 2:00....and we wait. Finally, at 2:40, they come and get us and take us down to courtroom "1B".

Like I said, I'm juror #17. They only need 6. The chances of me being picked is very slim. They would have to eliminate 11 people before me first.

But, I have to listen to the prosecuting and defense attorneys first. Each gets to talk and ask very generic questions for 45 minutes.

About 20 minutes into the prosecuting attorney's statements....the fire alarm goes off. We have to evacuate the building.

We're standing outside and we get hit with a patented Texas Sneak Attack Rain Storm™.

We get the all-clear to come back into the building. (The alarm was tripped by the construction crew in the basement). But, we have to go BACK through the metal detectors. To get everyone in the courthouse BACK through the detectors takes quite a while.

We get back into the courtroom and the prosecuting attorney starts back up and gets another 25 minutes.

Then the defense attorney gets his 45 minutes.

Then we're asked to leave while they pick the jury.

About 20 minutes later, we're asked to come back in.

They pick the 6 jurors out of the first 9 people. I'm 8 away from being picked.

They thank us for our time and we're sent home.

I leave the courthouse at 5:30 (Just in time for rush hour traffic) and get home at almost 7:00 PM.

Then 3 weeks later, I get a check for $6.00.

So, I guess I will wait another 7 years before I get called again.
<score></score><crdate>6/26/2008 9:52:01 AM</crdate><rssdate></rssdate><atomdate>2008-06-26T09:52:01+01:00</atomdate></comment><comment>

tomphoolry @ 6/26/2008 8:19:24 AM

So IP...did you get empaneled or did the defense attorney look at you, say "Yeah, right" and send you home?
<score></score><crdate>6/26/2008 8:19:24 AM</crdate><rssdate></rssdate><atomdate>2008-06-26T08:19:24+01:00</atomdate></comment><comment>

SkandarGraun @ 6/26/2008 7:32:46 AM

"I am currently out of office playing Sudoku.
