The US Now Has a New Dollar
So, you know that Dollar coin that 3/4 of voters opposed?
Yeah, it's in mint now. But we still have the paper one too. picked by julea 2 years ago

I wish they would quit wasting our time and resources with new currency and figure out a better plan for it. Personally, I'd much rather do away with the penny than get a dollar coin.

I got a bunch of the Sacagawea dollar coins in change the other day from a railroad ticket vending machine. No one wants them. I DO like the image on that coin better than good old George.

However the
Seated Liberty
Gold dollar
Trade Dollar
Morgan dollar
and
Peace dollar

have all been tried in the past.
(It's illegal to even own a Peace dollar)

You know how to make the dollar coin accepted?

STOP FREAKING PRINTING THE DOLLAR BILL.

Sheesh.

If they introduced a 10 cent bill and didn't pull the dime, do you think that would work? Hell no. To make the dollar coin work, pull the dollar bill. I don't understand why they don't grasp this simple concept at the Mint.

I believe that the $1 coin is a great way for the government to save money. Sure, it costs twice as much to make, but doesn't need to be replaced every few years due to wear thusly saving money in the long run.

Yay! Another coin to add to my collection!

InherentHorizon: That 7 year old has never seen a quarter?

This brings up another question: Why are we putting Washington on two coins?

I think they're using George on the coin because of familiarity. They're logic being if the coin bears an image people are used to, they're more apt to use it. It still isn't going to fly though.

If you ask me, they should have put Lewis & Clark on the coin. Imagine what they would say today when, after all that hard work, they saw it was Sacajawea who got honored.

I don't think you read the article. George is merely the FIRST coin in the series.

I think they already know that. You're assuming that they're making these coins in order to replace the dollar bill. That doesn't appear to be the case...

"the Mint is hoping that collectors will be as interested in the dollars as they were with the State Quarters, which generated about $4.6 billion in seigniorage between January 1999 and April 2005, according to a report by the Congressional Budget Office."

For these coins, no it's not the case.

But the Sacajawea dollar, the ads (remember the ads?) had it being portrayed as the replacement for the dollar.

And that it was going to make vending machines work more smoothly.

Yeah, I read it. The logic still stands. If you get people to use the George Washington coins, you've gotten people hooked dollar coins. At that point it doesn't matter if you change it (anyway, it will soon have Jefferson, another guy who already has his own coin).

I think rotating the design is a horrible idea. The coins will become a pseudo-collector's items, destined to be the subject of infomercial "collect 'em all" kits, a la the 50-state quarters. Retiring old designs will make people horde them even more the the Sacajawea coins.

It's not a horrible idea, because that's what they WANT to happen!

"Seigniorage is the profit gained by a government when it issues currency. The U.S. government discovered at the launch of the State Quarters series that a large number of people were collecting each new quarter as it rolled out of the U.S. Mint, taking the pieces out of circulation. Since it costs the Mint less than five cents for each 25-cent piece it produces, the government made a profit whenever someone bought a coin and chose not to spend it. The U.S. Treasury estimates that it has earned about $4.6 billion in seigniorage revenue from the quarters so far."
