We had a kid who fell asleep in class. The teacher silenced the bell with a cloth and then put a strip of duct tape over his back so when he woke up he would be stuck

he might have deserved it....I say that only half-jokingly...

say what you will, but I am surprised we don't hear more stories of kids getting slapped upside their faces and/or mouths...

We seem to be faced with a generation of parents...some from my generation, no doubt...that seem to be dropping the ball...

I wonder who told on her, and how the student feels about the incident? Are the students rallying behind the student?

While it was crossing the line, being a younger, newer teacher, she probably has a more playful attitude toward her students.

Back in my school days, I remember younger teachers being more friendly, and less rigid.

I bet she goes into another profession within two years.

I agree with that, however, that was not funny or called for. No we didn't have the full story. The teacher may be young, but there is a protocol for discipline, and far as I know, duct tape doesn't fall under it ANYWHERE.

**First guess doesn't count. Yep, I knew too.

The thing is she wasn't even discipling the kid. It was a joke that the whole classroom was doing even the kid was laughing about it.

I fit was done as a disciplinary action that would be a different story.

She did cross the line, but I feel that the parents took it to seriously.

crazy, I don't see how this is a problem if the kid was laughing about it. I feel sorry for that teacher, probably feels like she went into the wrong career now..

She ended her account stating, "This incident, was in reality, an opportunity to have fun with the students while getting a message to them. Looking back, I know that it was inappropriate for me to break the lines of formality."

Oh...eff that! I feel bad that she was made to apologize for having fun in the class with the class.

It's NOT like she threatened him with peanuts or something. seeeesh.

"Board members also voted that the teacher should get counseling."

hehe. nice!

Ours would go down the hall to the insanely cold drinking fountain, fill her coffee mug and douse you.

No one came screetching upto the school to have her suspended. They just slapped the kid on the back of the head "Don't sleep in class"

Maybe she should have just slept with him. That's worked out for other teacher/student relationships.

I don't see what the big deal is here. Even the kid that was duct taped thought it was funny. Where is the problem? She got her message accross, no one was hurt, everyone had a good time with it.

It's getting to the point that teachers can't do anything to discipline a child. I know, I know, she should have just sent him to the principal; but then the kid would have gotten in trouble instead of just been given a friendly warning. People are just looking for lawsuits and it's a damn shame that you can't show an ounce of personal creativity in discipline without taking a major risk.

So which was it, duct tape or masking tape (the article mentions both)? Duct tape could have ruined clothing - making a parental complaint legitimate - whereas even my hamster could escape from masking tape.

I once taped my nephew's feet together when he was being a pain in the ass, in the hope that he'd believe me whenever I told him that I'd duct tape him to a chair the next time he made his sister cry.

Didn't work.

My eldest boy has a teacher who regularly messes around and plays harmless pranks on the kids and they learn and love the guy.

It's a shame that like you say people in more and more professions are having their personality stifled in the name of "formality". If people were more free to express themselves and were more relaxed, especially teachers, then perhaps we'd have a more conducive learning atmosphere for our kids.
