Last night, amongst some friends, the question whether M. Vick should be allowed back in the NFL was raised. I also saw that it was posted in the comments for the news thread on his 23 month sentence that will probably be dropped to 8 months or less for "good behavior."
What are your thoughts on this? Should this man be allowed back in?
IMO: NO. He does not deserve the privilege. He does not deserve to be in any position that sets him up for hero worship or as a role model. The man is an animal and as far as I am concerned his talents were nullified by his actions.
I am sure that some will not agree. Some will say that after he does his time, his slate should be wiped clean.
I would love to hear your opinions. Please don't attack me for mine as I will not attack you for yours.

I don't think he should be allowed back. He needs to learn that what he did isn't something that you can get away with. Sadly though, it's all about money and I wouldn't doubt if he's allowed to play again at some point.

Doing time does not give someone a clean slate. There are laws preventing a felon from owning a gun, for example.
Whilst I don't think it's worthy of law, I would hope that the NFL would enact some restrictions regarding convicted felons playing for them.

He should be allowed to play again.
However, his offensive line must leave for the duration of his on-field time.

1. We are all animals.
2. Other NFL players do or have done things similar or worse. Vick got caught.
3. Should he be allowed to play? No.
4. Will he be allowed to play? Yes.
Why?
Because he has talent and wins football games. A franchise will pick him up because a winning football team is a money-making football team.
Bottom line: It's football. It's business. It's all about the money.

I think that he should be allowed to play. He made a stupid mistake. That doesn't mean that all of his talent was stripped from him. The falcons probably won't take him back but I know a bunch of teams that would gladly jump at that chance.

What he did was no mistake, it was just 100% wrong.

After he serves his time, yes he should be allowed to play. Because its his job. If you commit a crime and go to jail you would lose your current job but after you do your time you would be able to get another job. Why can't he get another job as a quarterback in the NFL?

I hope they do not allow him back into the league... they probably will tho. Recently it seems that the NFL, as well as other sports groups seem to have lowered their standard of ethics.
Football isn't a real job, it is a posistion just like acting, and politics that forces you to represent everyone in your group, and I would hope that the NFL wont soil their name by letting him back in.

I have to disagree with the lowering of standards, if anything it's become more strict for the players.

I may need more time to consider this answer or hear more counter-argument to sway me.
What he did was horrible, illegal and despicable. Though he plead guilty, I doubt if he feels real remorse for the dogs. That being said, I doubt he'll do it again.
I think he should be allowed to play again. 2 years out of training he won't come back at first string and won't command near the salary he would have if this hadn't happened. It's unlikely he'll ever be liked by the fans (as a whole) and so his chances of getting any endorsement contracts are virtually nil and that's where the big money is for most of these guys.
I would also hope he'd have enough sense to try to redeem himself in some way. Giving 2/3 of his "first year back" salary to the humane society or SPCA or shelter might go a long way.
If they don't take him back, I won't shed a tear.

I really don't think he deserves the privelege of earning the salary that playing in the NFL will merit. I also don't think that he deserves the privelege of being a role model to young people. This man obviously does not have any love in his heart, and he still has yet to acknowledge the fundamental wrong that he's done. He caused pain and suffering to animals who couldn't defend themselves against it, and because of that, he in no way should be considered a celebrity or respectable individual. The worst kind of person is someone who can't take pity on people or creatures who can't fight for themselves, and that's the last type of person who our children should be idolizing.

Bottom line: It's football. It's business. It's all about the money. A comeback after 2 seasons missed to Prison could be tough. He would need to find a team that would have him (with the rep) and then prove his hasn't lost his edge while behind bars.
A lot of things go into the making of a world class star QB. Image definitely counts, judgment (on and off the field), will his teammates trust him, will the fans accept him? Even with current, practiced, honed, super-star skills, he will have a difficult time coming back.
(A savvy GM that wants a bad-boy team rep could play up this up for some big bucks, though. Raider fans actually LIKE it when others boo at our team.)

WOW. Are we now downvoting people because we don't like their opinion? If so, I'm outta here. Agree with acemak or not, it is a valid non-offense opinion. Why was this downvoted?

Because he commited a crime, he shouldn't be allowed back. In my opinion, being a professional athlete is a privilage. If you break the rules (continuously) or break the law, you shouldn't be allowed back in that sport. Those athletes are paid ridiculous amounts of money and I feel after they have broken the law, they don't deserve to play anymore.
