Yes, I'm sure most of you will think I'm crazy, but I'm excited that I've got Jury Duty on June 9th.
I've been called for Jury Duty once in my life and was not picked as a Juror.
It's a part of the judicial process that I am interested in being a part of, and now I get another chance!

The more uninteresting you appear to be the more appealing you will be to the attorneys selecting you.

I was called once also and wasn't picked either.
So, what do you think it will be??? Something interesting, or something that is a total waste of time in the judicial system?

The last time I was called, there were 35 prospective jurors. I was Prospective Juror #34. I was told before I walked in the door that I wouldn't be picked. They got their 12 jurors from the first 15 prospects.
It was a 4 way custody battle for a little boy...the Mother (#1), the Father (#2), the maternal grandparents (#3) and the paternal grandparents (#4) were all suing for custody.
I don't know how it ended.
I don't care what I get...but I do hope it's interesting.

I work for the state of Ca. and i work 12 hours shifts, night and day shifts. so jury duty is like a lottery win for us. we get paid full wage since we are state employees, and our longest day is 8 hours. "thank you Union 501"

Must be an epidemic. eljay and I both have Jury Summons, only a week apart, mind you. Mine is this week. Monday is gone, and I am waiting (after 6:30pm) to check for tomorrow. Where we are at the summons lasts for a week. You call every day through Thursday night to see if you have to show up the next day.
I had one a few years ago and didn't get it until I had just come off of leave. I showed up in uniform and told the judge that I had just returned from leave and the position where I was stationed was considered critical. He had me call (again) my boss and make sure. I did during the next break. He called on me first, I told him my position was a critical billet, and he thanked me for my service and excused me.
Some of the other excuses were almost humorous. One guy couldn't serve because he was painting his boat, another woman couldn't find a babysitter (her parents lived in the same town and were available), another just didn't like to serve. Too bad, so sad.

« IcePigs : I'm sure most of you will think I'm crazy Not me - I was called and sat a couple of years ago and it really was a fascinating experience. I'd shy away from calling it good, as it was fairly traumatic.
But fascinating, nonetheless.
One thing I will say though is take a book. The law is a slow and ponderous beast and you'll find there's a hell of a lot of sitting around waiting for the court to decide what you can and can't hear.
That book will be invaluable.

I served as an alternate on a federal case involving 4 defendants accused on a number of drug charges. It was interesting. There was a lot of down time--I finished something like 3 books over the course of a two week trial.
I truthfully could have lived to be 100 and died without ever seeing a baggie of crack quite happily. It was creepy, as a lot of the witnesses were already in prison for their own drug crimes.
During the selection process, more than one person stated "I don't think that anyone who goes to trial is innocent." Stupid. Being a juror is a right and privilage.

Well, some bad news on the home front.
I just got off the phone with my mom. As some of you may remember, she had a heart attack last October. They put a stint in her Left Anterior Descending artery (aka "the WidowMaker")
Well, she just got back from the Cardiologist and it looks like she has to have more surgery. This time she will have an Angiogram and then they will remove blood vessels from her legs and place them in her neck to skip the blocked vessels in her neck.
This process will start on June 4th....and nobody knows how long she'll be in the hospital.
Now it looks like I need to try to get out of Jury Duty.

I've got the Jury Duty letter 3 times already, and I'm only 23! It makes me wonder if I should buy a lottery ticket sometime.
School/classes is one excuse I've never been asked to explain. I've always printed off a copy of my timetable and attached it to my letter explaining why I couldn't attend jury duty, and I've never had hassles.

Sorry about your Mom IP. I hope all goes well. Adding her to my prayer list.
Just as well about the jury duty. I've been called 5 times so far. One time I actually made it to Voir Dire and wasn't selected. Like you, I wanted to actually serve on a jury, and I answered all the questions in such a way that the attorneys wouldn't have a reason to dismiss me, but no matter how I answered, the defense attorney didn't want a white, middle class male deciding the fate of his young, Hispanic man charged with aggravated robbery.
The other 4 times, they called more jurors than they actually needed for that day. I sat there all day those 4 days and was never called for any of the panels they needed. Four times they had called all the panels they needed for that day and I was always in the final group of people who had never been called. They released us stragglers early because they knew they didn't need to sit any more jurys that day.
As advised above, bring your iPod/walkman, a book or two and the newspaper. You're gonna need 'em.
