I'm sure they knew. It is virtually IMPOSSIBLE not to know that Muslims are offended by ham in this area. I'm not far from that town, and we've seen a BIG influx of Somali immigrants in the last 5 or 6 years, which has sprouted a lot of support for them, and a lot of anger with them.
Last year a man in that town rolled a pig's head into their mosque (he actually committed suicide shortly after this ham sandwich story came out) and it was so widely covered that trust me, pretty much everyone around here knows that ham is a taboo.

Agreed, anybody who doesn't know that ham is unclean for muslims and jews, is not from this planet. So it must have been done on purpose, and therefore certainly deserves attention (and probably some punishment).

As an aside, that site is terrible, full of flashing windows telling me that I've won something, offers of "Joke Toolbars", etc., what a load of rubbish.

So far as the ham debate goes....

When I waited tables WAY back in the day (1996)at a Pargo's (think TGIFridays owned by Perkins), I had a table of Muslim convert women. They were in for brunch and seated in the smoking section enjoying Mimosas. We had a dish called Picadilly circus, it consisted of hashbrowns, topped with poached eggs, crumbled bacon, and finished with hollandaise and green onions. I explained it to them just like that. She ordered it without omission, and another mimosa. This was a real PITA table, they had 3 rounds of Mimosa before their brunch was served. When it came out she threw a TIZZY, a total TIZZY. She said she was 'offended' that I served her bacon. I calmly explained that she ORDERED a dish with bacon, and that no offense was meant. Then she points to her headcovering with a manicured bejewelled finger and says "Do you know what this means?" I said "Your Muslim?" She said yes, and "You know we don't eat pork" and I said "And I know you don't smoke or drink Mimosa too" This really pissed her off, and she stood up with her plate. At that point I had to get away from her, and she chased after me with her picadilly circus in hand demanding an apology. I walked to the bar, took off my apron, and company issued tie, and walked out, and never came back. She probably chased the manager (who made us short staffed that morning by firing another server for back talking him) around with the plate after I left, I didn't care and I don't care. This was but a long series of events which led me to my belief that Relgion, Zealots, hypocrites and the interaction between them are what is really wrong with the world.
