Wow, that was pretty vague and hurt my head a little bit.

So they know she's dead, but they haven't found her body, and the suspect is missing and no where to be found.

I don't think we are getting all the information yet.

No, there's not much information which is infuriating. I want to know how they know she's dead.

According to NPR.com:
"Authorities had not recovered the body of 20-year-old Lance Cpl. Maria Frances Lauterbach, but they believed she was buried in a shallow grave in a residential area of coastal Onslow County, Sheriff Ed Brown said."

That's what the article from Yahoo.com said, . I've noticed that they have made corrections twice since putting the article out 23 minutes ago.

I'm guessing the sheriff is leaving out alot of details till they talk to this suspect.

It sounds like the investigation on the sexual assault was going nowhere. Seems kind of odd to murder her, especially considering her issue with lying. Unless of course, the baby was his, in which case I wonder if they will find her but not her baby.

Sad, really.

Ew, do you really think he might have stolen the baby from her? I hadn't even thought of that.

I HAD wondered why this loser would risk a murder charge to avoid a sexual assault charge. It didn't make any sense.

I suppose that while we're throwing out guesses, I'll add to the list. What if he somehow convinced her to run away with him (assuming it's his baby) and that they'd raise the child together. Then either she dies in childbirth, or he kills her afterwards because she panics and wants to go home. He buries her body and splits for the hills with his new kid. Stupider things have happened.

I'm going to make the assumption that the baby IS his. I noticed in the article that the victim's mother had been trying to convince her to give the baby up for adoption. The only reason I can see that happening is if the jerkoff is the father.

From the article I linked from Yahoo:

In court papers filed this week, prosecutors said the anticipated birth of the baby "might provide evidentiary credence to charges she lodged with military authorities that she was sexually assaulted by a senior military person."

So yea, I think he might have taken the baby. I mean, if he's going to kill her and bury the body, it's not a very big leap to cut the baby out. I'm guessing though that he may have thought a shallow grave, for both, would be enough to end the investigation against him.

Also, from the article. I missed it earlier.

The sheriff hinted Friday morning that a positive outcome was still possible. But that was before detectives received news of Lauterbach's death from an unidentified female witness who is a former Marine, he said.

Let's see if they find her body soon.

It seems they've found her remains. It's just coming out so again, not a lot of answers.
