I am only saying that getting hundreds of thousands of dollars, probably a million dollars plus removes some of the sympathy for this girl who got beat up as so many do. The difference is as you pointed out, the video tapping of it and the internet celebrity angle.
The ONLY thing that I would fault the family for is if they tried to sue Google/YouTube.Alright, I apologize. I know how you about lawsuits, though. :)

Lord knows how much they've already gotten for selling their story to People/inside edition and ???. From there who knows what's next, a book, a movie? All of that is hardly beyond the realm of possibility.
A black eye, a broken tooth and a few other bruises and gashes isn't a bad payment for who knows how much money. A few hundred thousand dollars minimum would be likely probably even more.

If there is lasting damage such as vision/hearing loss that would be another story, but we don't that to be the case yet.

Did the victim or her family release the video to the media? Her dad is pissed it's been all over the internet. If you want to blame anyone, blame the media. They are the ones that are turning this into a national event. Not this girl.
Sure, they are probably getting hundreds of calls from media outlets begging for a story and promising huge money. Have you ever had the media decend upon you? Do you know, without a shadow of a doubt, that you would not sell your story, knowing that it's going to be told, with or without your help? Why shouldn't they cash out on this? I can tell you though, that this young lady did not walk into that house thinking that she was not only going to make national news, but also make alot money off this. I don't think the parents, when first seeing their beat up daughter, thought Oh, what a cashcow!
The difference is they videotaped the whole incident, to get it on the internet. It makes the story 100 times more interesting because it provides great footage.
Should the victim and her family make money off this? Why the hell not. The media certainly is.
