S.F. officials locked out of computer network
Terry Childs was going to be fired from his computer engineer job with San Francisco. He disabled all the admin passwords but his own and refuses to divulge the pw. The city fears that he may have a 3rd party access the system and delete 1000's of highly sensitive documents. picked by bernardblack 3 months ago

To save a great bundle of money why don't they just pay him to unlock the system and then prosecute him anyway - be cheaper!

I feel like the only way he'd even consider that was if he had some written guarantee of immunity from prosecution. Why accept the money, knowing you'll be guaranteeing yourself serious jail time.

But then again, he's pretty much doing that anyway. Might as well make some loot, and have it sit in some mutual fund or CD for his time.

Never underestimate the value of a good password. Never underestimate the technological expertise of a systems administrator. Never give someone more access than they have need for.

Why delete documents when it is so much more entertaining to edit them?

If you are going down for document related crimes, have some fun with it. Strategically place or remove decimals and zeroes in figures. Change a 1 to a 2 in some places. Randomly sprinkle 'not's in text.

There are probably hundreds of hackers around the world that could get the password for them.

I kinda think they deserve for this to happen so that they learn not to give one man so much power. C'mon, this is lame action-thriller movie type stuff, you should know better than to let this just happen.
