I never really understood it, what seperates a murdering in battle, and something like this?

Maybe im just naive.

The difference is that in battle, someone is presumably shooting back at you. In this case, the detainees were already in custody and did not pose a threat. As I understand it, a killing is only considdered murder if it is caused by emotion or premeditation rather than circumstantial necessity.
