We were always threatened with breathalyzers at my NJ high school, but only if you were really fall down drunk would they even think about testing you. Knowing they were going to be there, though, were a pretty good deterrent (except for those convinced they were too cool for school, anyway).

I don't recall it being a problem. There were a few people who showed up drunk, but for the most part, it just wasn't accepted.

When did that change? I'm not THAT old, fer crying out loud!

In my area, it's not that rare, though not exactly common either, for someone to go to school drunk or high out of their mind. Had a kid yell "I DO DRUGS!" during an assembly, and when he was tested...Well, he did drugs.

I remember watching something on MTV's High School Stories where almost everyone that showed up to a dance was drunk and stumbling over eachother. Maybe same school?

At my school, you either go to the dance drunk, or you be really cool like me, go sober and then laugh at the boozeheads falling over themselves.

Recently, our school has started giving caught druggies/boozers right to the neighborhood cops. Those cops are also on campus during dances.
With breathalysers.
