When homer ate a very hot pepper on the Simpson's he got in touch with his spirit guide:

One of my favorite episodes.

One million SHU's! In comparison a jalapeno only has 2500-10000 SHU's.

I love hot and spicy food and I love peppers, but I think I will have to pass on this one.

I like spicy food too, but that would just kill the overall flavor of good eating. No thanks.

I like seasoned food, however I don't want it to make my face sweat, my nose run, or cover up the taste. Please pass the chocoate!

Actually, it's funny you should say that because the best thing to soothe your palate when you eat hot peppers is something sweet or fatty.
Capsaicin, the component that makes chilly peppers 'burn' in your mouth, dissolves well in oily substances but not in water - so it's not a good idea to drink a glass of water when you're in distress - drink milk instead, preferably fat.
Also, it's a good idea to spread some oil on your hands when you're cooking with fresh peppers.

And always, always, always (I don't think I can stress this enough) ALWAYS wash your hands between handling chillies and going to the toilet.
