Is American beer any good? Posted: 5 months ago by mutil8or
Ask most people where the best beer in the world comes from, and they'll probably say Germany or England. More worldly folks might mention Belgium.
But ask a beer aficionado these days, and odds are you'll get an answer that might surprise you – the good old U.S.A.

This doesn't really surprise me. America is a melting pot of beer styles so we have every kind of brewery and someone passionate enough to be a master behind the wheel. Thousands of microbreweries etc etc. Some of them have to be doing it right. :D

America really does have a lot of good beers, the problem is that most people don't look far past the macro's (Bud, Miller, Coors, etc).
I happen to consider myself to be a beer connoisseur, and belong to a beer community (beer advocate), and America has been putting out some really good beers. And American beers actually won a lot of awards this year, Oregon in particular housing a lot of breweries that came home with medals.
Mexico has the worst beer.

« coldbladed : My aunt tried to make hard cider at home once. It tasted like apple juice... and no one got drunk. Sounds like it wasn't allowed to ferment long enough.
Did she make the cider herself, or did she buy cider and try to let it ferment? If it was the former, it needed more time; if it was the latter, you have to be careful which cider you buy as most of them are now processed so that they cannot fement. You have to find some "local" cider, a farm or small company that produces it, and it will likely say "unprocessed" right on the label. that's the stuff that will ferment. Leave it in the fridge a good three weeks beyond the experation date and you have hard cider.
Note, that this could lead to serious illness, though I haven't had a problem with it yet.

I'm not sure. There was just some jug sitting out in the living room that she was really protective about not letting people bump it. And then we drank it...

Oddly enough Utah has quite a few very good breweries ,Wasatch, Uinta, Moab Brewery, Squatters and my personal favorite Zion Canyon Brewery.
Kind of interesting seeing how it's common knowledge that Utahan's consume less beer than any other state or province in North America.

Great Lakes Brewery and Bell's are two of my favorites. I think I have access to Zion, but I haven't heard of the others.

Mexico has the worst beer. I agreed with you till you dissed our southern beer neighbors. Certain Mexican beers have their place and purpose when floating a river, in an intertube, in 95+ degree weather. Modelo comes to mind. Tecante if you are desperate. Hey, they require cans, ok?
And how do you know it's the absolute worse?? Ever had a Uruguay beer? A Greenland beer?
I rest my case.

I rest my case. Modello? You can't be serious... I don't care for Modello, but I'll drink a Negra Modello on occassion. It's basically just water, though. I can't stand any of the other corn-laden beers Mexico tries to put out. Wait... No, I like Bohemia sometimes. But other than those two I can't stand Mexico's beers.
And Greenland and Uruguay? Never had the opportunity to try, but if you send me some I'd be glad to form an opinion.

Alabama has some pretty stupid laws concerning beer. There's alot of good stuff out there that can't be sold here.

Dude, floating the river is thirsty business. You are also going to have to climb out of said river at some point, so you don't want to be A. pass out and miss the exit, or B. be so drunk you drown while getting out. Puking at any point is acceptable but frowned upon by nearby tubers.
Ok, so tell me a canned beer that is acceptable while tubing. And if you say Heineken, I'm on the next plane to come kick your ass.

« Alton : Dude, floating the river is thirsty business. Haven't actually been tubing, but surely there are better options? Is the can necessary? I suppose the beer stays colder longer in the can, yes? I'll stand by Bohemia if we're talking Mexi-Cans (I'm going to hell for that pun).
Personally, I avoid cans altogether; I just don't like the taste that they rub-off (heh, rub-off) on the beer. Except, for some reason, Fosters (Australian for kangaroo piss) isn't half-bad out of the can; but tastes like piss from bottle or keg.
Sorry, Alton; I get worked up over Mexican beers. I've only had three that I've found tolerable, and only two that I like. Everything else that I haven't liked anything else that I've had from Mexico.
Generally I like the German beers and the Belgians. My favorite type of beer is a Vienna Lager, I'm also really fond of Dunkels and Weissebiers, red ales, scottish ales, and irish ales. I've also recently discovered an affinity for white ales.
I don't often care much for pale ales, though there are a few exceptions; and it is very rare that I enjoy a stout.

No bottles in the river, for obvious reasons, so yes, only cans. I do prefer bottles the rest of the time.
I'll try Bohemia the next time we tube, and let you know.
