 Making Friends
Making Friends
Hello, six-year-old child.
Seeing as how fate has brought us together here, in the crowded coach section of this expensive airplane, I thought I should introduce myself. picked by Bornbad 7 months ago

Well said, Kendar; it's like you're inside my head.

I don't particularly like children and I certainly don't WANT one, but I guess I don't see the humor here.

Sorry.

Possibly what turned me off immediately was her presumption that she's SMARTER.

No, honey. Possibly, you are better educated. Probably you're more articulate. But intelligence has nothing to do with either education nor speaking ability.

And as for socialization...if those words were actually SPOKEN to a child...She deserves to be corrected. If a child is not behaving in public, take it up with the parent, don't condescend to the child.

I expect adults to behave like adults, children, like children. This is a story of someone who unrealistically expects a child to behave like an adult.

Me too. Kindred spirits?

I’ll be here in my seat, fantasizing about hurtling my childless adult body out of the airplane and into the sky.
Been there.

Maybe she should have directed some of her anger at the woman 'caring' for Timmy. It's pointless to ask a kid not to be a kid, but it's not pointless to ask the adult to rein him in a little.

I agree with many of the above comments from all of you in principle. I agree that the 'culprit' here is the child's mother, obviously.

However, I am a rather frequent flyer, usually flights of 6 or 12 hours' duration, always in economy class. And I am always grateful when I am not seated next to a small child, a mother with baby, an extremely talkative person, or a very big person.

All of these types invade your space, physical or otherwise. And it's certainly true that when you squeeze people together in small spaces (aeroplanes, elevators, apartment buildings) we tend to need our private space even more than usual.

Ok, but it's really just an article about day-to-day annoyances, kind of a Seinfeld-y routine about a person wishing for peace and quiet in a public space, which is an unrealistic expectation, when we think about it. I wouldn't treat it as a personal manifesto on the writer's part.

thank you :) Her complaining was kind of irritating me.

You live on earth, lady. There are immature humans lurking in every corner. Deal with it.

Also, as a parent, I am sick of people thinking that we parents can HAVE total and complete control of our children. I try to teach my children well and they listen pretty well. But, it seems to be overlooked that these children have minds of their own and don't always do as they are told.

Then you have to ask yourself: Do we want mindless children that always do what they're told? Because, then they become mindless adults that always NEED someone to tell them what to do and what not to do. Now THAT is annoying to ME.
