Understood. The idea that woman can only be a love interest or star in a chick flick is incredibly annoying. There are exceptions, but not enough.

I've been trying to come up with examples, but it's a struggle. And for every "Juno," there's a "Knocked Up" (I hated that movie; yes, I know I'm probably alone for that).

I agree with the intentions of the article, but that 'affirmative action' introduction had me set to click 'close'.

The ratings system is also really skewed when it comes to men and woman having sex. Male nudity is rated more harshly than female nudity, because (IMO) female nudity is expected. But, a movie showing a woman having an orgasm is rated more harshly than a man having one.

And I'm so f**king sick of Hollywood's obsession with brutalizing women. Rapes, beatings, murders, domestic violence... it's so overdone it's insulting.

I guess im dense.. I dont get the article, and I needed to read the comments here to see what the point was. I thought the author just hated or loved Grindhouse.

I don't understand... There aren't enough? because there are 'like' no movies like that, with a few exceptions? WHAT?!? Thats like saying there are 'like' no movies about working in a QuikStop, with a few exceptions...
How many movies do you want there to be?

What genre are you even talking about? Is the arguement that you don't want a comedy, drama or action movie?

I'm sorry, but i'm confused by the whole discussion, and I would like to participate in it.

Summary: There are no/few strong women in movie roles right now. Across all genres. The only genre with a blip on the woman scale is romantic comedies, and even then they are sappy.

Even in Grindhouse, the strong woman is less like a "woman," and more like a film man, lacking an emotional side and bent on destruction.

Thank you -thank you-

I will not - steadfastly refuse - to watch any movie with a rape scene that isn't integral to a biograpic picture.

I hated, hated that the only way the queen in 300 could help the cause was by being raped.

It's not even in the original story... it's sick that the only "powerful" way she could help was through sex.

I liked it. Normally I hate hate rape scenes. This was one of the first where the woman was able to get back at her attacker while helping Sparta.

Sure, he got his own...but there was no other story arc around it? No other way the same result could have happened, it had to be about rape and sexualized slander?

...Again, it isn't in the original comic at all. They could have just left it out.

It thought is was great characterization on her part. He did one of the worst things a guy can do to a chick, and she volunteered for the sake of her own husband and country. And in the end she killed him slowly, quoting his own words.

Of course they could have found something different, but this is one of the few times I found it fitting. Not to mention I really, really liked the moment when she got him back, it was beautiful.

...You can't possibly include Catwoman. Bad movie.

Besides, Catwoman fits the model of "woman turned to man." Just a man with boobs and a too-skimpy outfit.

...Storm in X-Men is a better example.

Your list is only 4. None of them recent. How many movies with strong men can you name off the top of your head? (More than 4)
