Shelter pets, yes.

On ICHC (the LOLcats/Cheeseburger site), we have a tradition where on our own birthdays, we go to a shelter or pet adoption at a local pet store and buy toys and treats for the pets being adopted. Most of the time these animals are just bored, laying around in small cages, waiting. Add one little catnip mousie, and the prospective owners and lurkers get to see the kitty play.

Best use of $10 birthday dollars EVER!
