...Wow. That's like ten bucks for a CD and 10 free record. Seeing as how there's some $10K records, that's one lucky SOB who bought it. I would probably forgo a house in suburban Cali and get a $5M mortgage for the collection. The other $2M would pay for a server to seed torrents of all the music for everyone and an aging librarian to rip CDs. Share the love. heh.

It's the undisputed largest collection of recorded music in the world
I'd dispute that.
Mike Read, Paul Gambacini and John Peel all have (or had in Mr Peel's case) record collections encompassing every recording released in the UK and many white labels and other promotional recordings.
But that said, this was still an awesome buy. If I had the money, I'd want to buy it too.

I noticed the winning bidder is no longer a registered user. Do you think that means that this person backed out of the deal? Or is this a common thing with ebay?
Regardless that man has an amazing collection.

Regardless that man has an amazing collection. I was wondering about the winning bidder's status too.
Also, where would you store this collection?
I guess if you have to ask, you can't afford it.

with all the publicity the auction got, I doubt the buyer was a regular ebayer. More likely it was someone who registered specifically for this item and if they don't want any publicity it would make sense to drop out of ebay.
Who ever it was, they got themselves a bargain.

Please also note that the deal was BUYER pays to ship the collection and that there are several companies and patents transfered, as well.
I think someone is divesting themselves of some companies that are money drains and/or some disputed patents with extensive legal fees.
[/sour grapes]
