I saw a guy that was panhandling in Albuquerque fold up his sign, walk behind a Burger King and drive away in a newer model Jeep Grand Cherokee. Haven't given a dime since.

On a side note I have bought meals for those that really need it and are smart enough to ask near restaurants and places where they can get the help they need in the form of food rather than cash.

Get to know your local homeless. It's not hard just talk to them. You probably see the same folks everyday. You will know who is really in need and who isn't pretty quick.

Also look at peoples' shoes. Expensive sneakers or shoes that look nice = most likely not homeless.

I remember once some guy approached me as I walked down the sidewalk in my downtown area. He said he needed a buck or so so that he could get some cigarettes. I think I gave him two bucks. A few hours later I walked by the same spot and the same guy used the same line on me. I told him I already gave him two dollars earlier. He apologized with a very red face.

Downtown Toronto is the worst. There are a alot of genuine homeless people that need help but, when it gets warm, all the loser kids from the suburbs come into town and beg for lunch money. It's really pathetic.

I used to have a car that was in such a bad condition that a panhandler did not accept my money.
