Capture the black squares, avoid the red ones, Black circles give bonus points and red ones deduct points. Not as easy as it sounds...

Actually, Black circles appear to be a random power-up, red circles a random power-down. It's not just points you get - I got a variety of 'Small square', '1000 points', 'Slow motion' and 'Invincibility' from black circles, and 'Large square' from a red circle.
