Given that he saved PBS it's sad to see him go, but they shouldn't just do away with the show because it's old. They need to revamp it, update it, create a New Mister Rogers.

I can see Lady Alzebeth getting an STD... or the trolly being searched by DHS...

...or not. :)

I do respect the opinions of those who say that kids need more face-time with a real person. Too many 'Dora the Explorers' and not enough 'Mr. Rogers' out there.

Yes, he quite literally saved PBS as well as the VCR (and all the recording technology that folowed)

. He Saved Both Public Television and the VCR
Strange but true. When the government wanted to cut Public Television funds in 1969, the relatively unknown Mister Rogers went to Washington. Almost straight out of a Capra film, his 5-6 minute testimony on how TV had the potential to give kids hope and create more productive citizens was so simple but passionate that even the most gruff politicians were charmed. While the budget should have been cut, the funding instead jumped from $9 to $22 million. Rogers also spoke to Congress, and swayed senators into voting to allow VCR’s to record television shows from the home. It was a cantankerous debate at the time, but his argument was that recording a program like his allowed working parents to sit down with their children and watch shows as a family.

My parents watched Mr Rogers, I watched Mr. Rogers, my son watches Mr. Rogers. He is well loved. It is sad that after all these years he will be "phased out". Yes, there are shows like "Blues Clues" and "Dora" out there that teach life lessons, but none as calm and easy as Mr. Rogers.

As a proud "non-cable" family I will be sad to see Mr. Rogers go. The factory tours are priceless and should still be produced in some form. Stuff like "the land of Make Believe" was very useful in reinforcing the message of the show in a way kids could relate. He was also a minister, and preached at local church in Pittsburgh. My stepmother almost ran him over with her Saab one morning on her way to work, he was crossing the street. I love Mr. Rogers and I will miss it off of the feed, but the new shows that replaced him are very good and teach pre-reading and science concepts well. If they allowed it all to be youtubed I'd be all for it and I'd have my kids watch it that way, I think Fred Rogers would be for it too.

There are few, if any, people that I respect more than Fred Rogers. I stayed up ridiculously late a few times over the summer and managed to catch his show. I can honestly say that I can't watch one of his episodes without feeling changed. I love this man and I love this show. I am very, very sad indeed.

Indeed. Over the years I have lost respect for many a public figure.

Mr. Rogers will never be in that category because he lived what he said. He was absolutely the real deal.

Well that explains it! I turned on PBS this morning so my poor sick baby could watch his favorite show. And no Mr. Rogers! I just thought they had changed their programming a bit. I had no idea they did this. I am soooo sad now. =(
