Depending on your POV, this could be seen as quite an uplifting thing.

Sure, it's a dumb joke and it makes a mockery of the voting process involved.

But the combination of this and Ron Paul not now being the President-elect shows that the combined mass of the internet can steam-roller the pompous over-inflated self-importance of institutions like MTV (who are now so far removed from popular music that I'm sure they think they have done a good thing here) but when critical thinking and expressing an opinion is important, mob-rule is put to one side.
