In that case, would it be more plausible that the rear blades would be able to be synced but the main blades wouldn't?

I think the shot would have to be edited after the shoot (software edited) in order for blades spinning at a variable rate to appear motionless.

I think what's meant with that the main blades are variable isn't that they're constantly changing speed but that they can adjust the speed to whatever the situation calls for. I bet that they could even match (if the rpm's could keep it in the air) the main blade's rpm's to the rear blade's and enhance the effect even more.

I would have to think that it's a lot easier to do this while shooting, and the way that there's no hiccup in any frame would be my guess as to how it was done. There's precision speed controls that let you sync up frame rates to eliminate flickering when shooting a TV, this is pretty much along the same lines. Also, when things are edited in post, especially frame rates, things don't look nearly as smooth. Just my 2 cents.
