New Categories

Someone created WTF? and WTF?? categories recentley.

Please remember that before you create a category, you should discuss it with the community first by opening a forum thread, and getting a few memebers to agree to the neccessity of adding the category.

WTF? ad WTF?? are probably not needed. I would have voted no, anyway.

Before creating a category there are two things you should do:

1. Decide if the category is needed.

2. Open a thread in the forums for discussion on the communities' desire for this category.

I didn't open this thread to point any fingers, and whoever you are, congrats on reaching a high enough level that you have earned this power, but as Uncle Ben told Petey; with great power comes great responsibilty.

I'm going to revise this section in the FAQ so that it is more clear in the future, but I wanted to bring this to everyone's attention so that it does not become a recurring phenomenon.

It should show who makes an important change like that so we can all see who's editing at higher levels.

To my knowledge this displays all changes made on the site, but for some reason it did not show either of the categories being made.

actually it did show them being made by Hoosker.

Yes there is no need for the category.

And as I mentioned in the bugs thread, do not use non-alphanumeric characters in your categories. The use of ? is what caused the problem.

He wanted only 1 category but couldn't edit it, so when he tried to rename it, another category was created instead.

OK First off, I didn't read your post in the bug thread 2many. That would have saved some grief.
I actually was looking at how to create a category and the entire process of colors and so on... Didn't think I needed permission to explore the site since I am at a certain level and have been here for quite awhile.
Yes it glitched, and I spent about an hour looking at how to fix it, but couldn't.
Second, as once again 2many has pointed out, you can tell who's doing any edits.
Third, BS on asking permission through voting to open a new category. I haven't added any categories to plime and wasn't going to this time, was just looking at the process and was going to delete it as I did the Health 2 category (which by the way I didn't add) but if I did want to add it "I have to ask" first?
Check out the previous threads and find out how that works. Maybe 5 responses to "add a new category?" questions.

Maybe my long work days are putting me in the wrong mood, I'll pm jax to ask him and his crew to please fix my mistake and take a little break from the condescension of this thread.

On the creation of the WTF category.
I saw that yesterday, and except for the 'WTF??' additional category, I thought it was a good idea. Some articles just don't fit in anywhere, and 'weird' isn't weird enough.

For the record, I started this thread in an effort to address the issue so that it doesn't become an epidemic with everyone who hits the appropriate level to make a category. Could you imagine a flood of categories?

I was not aware that there was an error. That's my fault for not reading 2many's post in the bugs forum closely enough. I saw "WTF?" and was like a"WTF?!"

Also, I think most of us are aware of how to look at who made the editing changes, I was attempting to not single anyone out (Hoosker in this case).

This whole "check with the community" and "only 3 or 4 people agree to it before a category is made in the past" issue, while true, is what jaxumlotus mentioned was a requirement, and is the reason I brought it up. I made a category without concensus -classic internet-, and he was like "dude, where was the community's concensus?"

Unfortunately, not a lot of people reply to "Here's a new category idea", so we have to go with limited concensus. So long as there are no "no's" in a thread, it seems like everyone likes the idea.

Currently there is a request to make an FAQ category so we can stop bumping the current threads. I think only three people have jumped in there so far, and it was created almost 24 hours ago.

Wasn't trying to stir the drama pot here, really.

Whatever Jax says goes of course, but personally I don't see an overridding need to ask for a general consensus for a new category.

When I added Astronomy I didn't ask.

The beautiful thing is we can all gain access to edit the site in various ways.

Personally I feel if you want to add a category go ahead and add it. Of course if there isn't a consensus than there is always the chance that someone might remove it. In the end whichever way the majority of us wants will win out. If Hoosker or whoever (whomever?) creates a category I don't feel is needed and I delete it, he can undelete it and possibly ask our opinion on the need or desire for such a category.

A good way to look at the results is how much use is it. When I created Astronomy it quickly get used so even though there was no consensus there was an obvious need and desire for it.
