Now put down that guitar hero and get crackin'
NEVER!!!!

Actually, my daughter is 5 and I think I will start her with lessons in the next year or two. When she starts lessons, I would bet that I become more interested to start playing myself.

My son (who's 9) loves guitar hero so much, he has actually asked to learn to play a real guitar.

My older brother is a piano and guitar teacher. I may just bring them both to his house once a week for lessons starting this summer...

I've been fooling around with writing music lately. I've always put stuff together, but I've actually started writing out the notes in the keys, and time signatures and all that jazz. I did a short piece this morning.

Bah.

It's about a minute long of 3 separate cello solos with some violins and violas on backup. I intend to learn to play all the cello parts, and maybe see if some cello friends are down to play it with me.
Only thing I don't like it when I saved it as a .wav file it kinda clipped the epic ending.

Guitar, keyboards, bass, and drums. I've played guitar over 30 years(not in a row). I've jammed with some really real musicians. I have recorded over 35 hours of my own crap. I've played all the instruments and produced and mastered my own stuff. I have a few things that I'm proud of, but I get the most juice from jamming with my son ElSuper, a piano virtuoso. I gave him my Ibanez Artcore guitar to learn the instrument. I have a Charvel Strat copy right now. I can't play for more than about 10 minutes as to my shoulder stuff. We also have a Korg work station that can record up to 32 tracks.

Voice, just voice. I did take 2 years of piano and a few more years of guitar but I don't keep up with those. I am a tenor/baritone. I don't have a bass range. I have been singing barbershop for over 25 years. I have a single 4th place International Chorus medal while singing with the Alexandria Harmonizers. I intend, in due time, to sing with the Masters of Harmony and earn a gold medal with them. I enjoy singing in quartets also. I am the lone tenor in the church choir (balancing with four basses and the rest of the choir is a challenge. I still get nervous singing solo.

I'm studying electric bass in college, so hopefully I can say I'm a pro-musician one of these days. It's going quite well actually, it just takes time for my network to develop.
I'm also a songwriter, mostly writing stuff for my own band. For those interested you can check out my myspace site, www.myspace.com/maartenbakker .

That’s quite an arsenal, you can host at tindeck, we’d love to hear some. Who are these really real musicians you’ve jammed with?

Awesome!! Do you have any barbershop recordings? I’m always baffled when I hear this sort of thing, have you heard of Da Vinci’s notebook?

Myspace is blocked at work, so I’ll check this out when I get home tonight.

I use Finale 7.0 to compose all of it.
this one seems to be popular too.

*EDIT* It seems the Tindeck isn't working? so if you can't get it there, it's also the song I have on my profile for myspace
It's called Bunny Mayhem.

I did it for a living for a while..
Bass, keys guitars, vocals. I was always a Bassist, never wanted to be anything else, even though my Mom insisted I learn Piano (she's a choir director/piano teacher) and then she made me try to learn guitar. I just wanted to play Bass.
I have a great voice for backing vocals, but it's not strong enough to sing lead over three other volume junkies. As a result, I made a good living playing bass and singing backups.

Sweet. You have the talent. Good control. I don't sing but my son, ElSuper is in the UC Berkeley chorus. Breathing seems to be my problem(my voice isn't trained at all). I love harmonies.

Missed this thread way back. Thanks UC for resurrecting it!!

I've played piano since I was 5. Started playing guitar when I was 14. Was a music major in HS and first 2 years of college. Worked at a music school for 5 years during HS and college as office manager and piano, guitar, accordian, recorder, and occasional drum teacher. Taught one trumpet lesson too.

Used to play on holidays at a nursing home where I was a volunteer. Also at boy scout meetings. My first band during high school was "Delight in Disorder". Our church pastor used to let us practice in the church, so I got to play the Hammond B3 organ and occasionally, the pipes!! Of course, our drummer died at an early age - he was about 40 when he passed away (and no, the band only lasted a few months)

Stopped playing regularly when I got my first apartment - left my piano behind at mom's since sisters were starting to take lessons.

Finally, 6 years ago when I was layed off from my job, I moved the piano to my place. I'm so rusty, though.

About 2 years ago I bought a Yamaha digital piano which I keep at BF's place. This way I can put on headphones and all anyone can here is "plunk plunk plunk" until I've practiced enough to let people hear me.

My immediate goal is to get back to the level I played in college. It's tough to play for more than 20 minutes at a time, though because of carpal tunnel syndrome in both wrists. I try to wear my wrist braces, but it's not the same.

Now, BF's son is using the room where the digital piano is, so I'm going to move it into the living room so I can play again - it's been about 3 months now.

After a very looooong hiatus (roughly 15 years), I've gotten back into composing music again. I even bought a laptop just to act as a portable music workstation.

So here's a little piece of techno/electronica/something-or-other I whipped up using Ableton Live (and thank you to yoornotme for the heads-up about that software).

Diamonds in the Dark

Once I'm more comfortable with the various settings and effects in the program, maybe I'll even put together something good. But for my first dip back in the musical waters, I'm encouraged by the result. :)

Starting at eight years old I began learning the banjo. 36 years later I now play banjo, guitar, mandolin, bass and keyboard/piano.

Folk, Blues, bluegrass and rock. The Dead (Jerry especially) have been the greater influence on my attitude and style.

Up until the last couple of years I have been in some band format since around 10 years old.

Now I mainly do home recordings using my Mac and Garageband.

You sound good, Unzer... Very W-U-K-Y. Do you ever play at Common Grounds? EDIT: Or anywhere, locally?
