We've got a few beer connoisseurs on here, and I figured this would be a good way to hip each other to some solid beers.

Feel free to review and recommend beer, but please be sure to give reasonable expectations. For instance, don't go reviewing a stout without referring it to a stout. Just because you like a stout (or lager, or ale, or whatever) doesn't mean everyone does.

Old Leg Humper is one hell of a porter; especially if you're looking for a different taste. I know, the name is silly; but it's a great brew. It's dark and full bodied, with an underlying hint of chocolate which apparently comes from the chocolate malts used in brewing. Don't worry, the chocolate is not over-powering; it is simply an enhancement of the taste. If you see it, buy it and drink it. You can thank me later.

Badger Golden Glory:

It's a beer to be treated respectfully - not because of excessive strength (although it is 4.5% so not a weak beer) but because of its peach blossom and melon fragrance.

This does, I'll admit, seem wrong. And trying to drink it all night could be excessive - the flavours might become cloying.

But at the end of an evening's drinking when your senses are a little dulled anyway is when it comes into it's own.

The peach and melon flavours then are perfect - refreshing even.

It is a beer where less is more. Try it. You won't regret it.

Corona or Guinness.
But for me Guinness has to be a draft.
'Tis a mortal sin of the Irish to call Guinness any good when it's been bottled.

I've never actually tried Murphy's Red. I've seen it but never picked it up. I'd like to try it one day, but the only thing I've heard people say about it is "Murphy's Red is good." But people say that about Budwieser, so that doesn't make me want to try it. What about it is good? (not trying to be a d**k, just wondering before I go out and buy it)

« Blankspace73 : Corona
I can't believe you just said that. Corona? That's just chilled Mexican piss. Seriously. That's what piss tastes like after your body processes tequila. Sorry, I can't stand Corona. Even with the lemons or limes (which I don't think should be necessary to enjoy a properly brewed beer).

lol

As I said, Guinness is best as a draft. If I could I'd get that 24/7.
I love it. =)
It sucks bottled.

If we were going to say liquor/vodka, something with higher proofs, I'd say either Jagermeister, Hypnotic, or Crown Royal.

What about you guys?

Maredsous 10. Hands down the best Belgian ale I've yet to find. But be warned, the ABL runs a wee bit high at 10%. But I swear you won't know until it's too late.

If you want something a little more ummmmm dark, luscious, velvety...mmmmmmm sorry where was I? Oh yes, try the Maredsous 8 with some chocolate cake.

That's the Belgians for you.

I went to Ghent for a drinking weekend once* and sampled a huge number of savage but incredibly tasty beers.

One of my favourite Belgian beers is Duvel (and yes, Duvel is Belgian for Devil).

*Actually it was a friend's wedding, but for the most part it was about the drinking.

Coopers Sparkling Ale

Went to Outback Steakhouse the other day with the wife. She loves their Bloomin’ Onion. I detest the place, personally; there isn’t a decent thing on the menu. I ended up with a burger since I figured that had the least chance of tasting foul. It was a bit busy that night so it took a while before we were seated; 45 minutes to be exact (despite calling ahead, but I degress). We ended up spending 45 minutes at the bar; she drinking pepsi and me matching her with beers. I’d never had this ale and was intrigued by the term ’sparkling’. Before it was even opened I had the distinct suspicion that I was being suckered. But that turned out to be completely false. It had a sediment at the bottom that needed to be distributed through the beer, but I was thankful that the bartender remembered to do this because otherwise I might have had a bad experience with it. As it was, I greatly enjoyed this ale and will likely purchase this and only this the next time my wife drags me to Outback Steakhouse. (by the way, the first one the bartender opened was rolled a bit roughly as she tried to distribute the sediment around and she ended up giving me a second one for free as an aology. Best mistake ever.) By the way, I was wrong about the burger; but at that point I was so blasted that it didn’t matter.

I know what you mean. I like wheat beers, but I cringe when I forget to mention to the bartender I want it sans lemon.

People who drink Blue Moon or some other white ale with an orange turns me off too. I must add that I do not like Blue Moon even without the orange. I think it is the coriander I hate in the beer.

I am tired of the trend of people adding fruit to beer to make them like it.

I actually like Blue Moon. It's far from my favorite beer, but I don't mind drinking it. I even purchased a twelve pack of it once or twice. It does taste good with a little OJ, by the way; but it's able to stand on it's own in my opinion. I don't drink it often though; because as I said it is far from being a favorite.

I am not knocking the beer. I personally don't care for it because of just one little flavor that is hidden in it. Like I said I think it is the coriander.

I bartended for many years and the fruit in the beer thing always got me. I think it annoyed me because I am a true beer lover. I love to sample beers from all over the world. I love stouts, dark and pale ales, lagers, lambics and beer all over the beer spectrum. I have had other beer lovers poke fun at me because I drink Budweiser on a regular basis. There is nothing wrong with drinking mass produced American beer. There is a reason Budweiser is one of the largest selling beers in the world, it is always consistent. You know what you are going to get; a light, crisp clean beer that is easy to drink. To me Budweiser is a session beer. It is a beer I can drink a lot of and maintain myself. When I go out to a bar, many times I will treat myself with one or two "expensive" beers before I switch to a lager and continue drinking. I can't drink heavy beer all of the time.

As for some beers I would suggest:

Delirium Nocturnum: It is a strong dark ale, watch out when drinking them for they are 8.5% alcohol. The start is somewhat fruity and the finish is a nice nutty flavor. This is a must try beer.

Chimay Grande Reserve: This is another strong dark ale this time with 9% abv. This is a great smelling and tasting beer. This is an expensive beer that you should use to celebrate your birthday or it just being Tuesday. Drink it and be merry.

I agree that this beer from Portugal is really good.

Personally, Belgium beers :

My best : the well known Hoegaarden, best white beer

The fruity Rodenbach; Mmmmmmmmmmmmmm

Do not forget the leffe

Finally, from my place; If you have the chance to find any beer from the unibrouebrewery, they are fabulous...

I like the taste of corona but it has way too much of a head. I open a bottle of that stuff and drink foam for 5 minutes.

Butt-weiser?? I'll try not to knock you for that admission (it was a brave thing to do) but bleh. Here is a review I wrote about bud for one of those 'rate some beer' sites. (beeradvocate is free if you're interested in joining one, ratebeer appears to charge you after a free trial of one day, f-that... But I could be wrong on that, it seems that there are just 2 different levels of membership... I guess I'll find out for sure when tomorrow my account either expires or remains)

Their logo is pretty awesome. I guess if you’re going to pee in a bottle and try to market it, you had better have some pretty eye-catching packaging. These guys have great business sense. Why waste time perfecting the taste when the bulk of the American public will swallow pretty much anything they can afford? I used to drink this when I was underage because I didn’t know what I was doing other than acquiring something that would get me drunk. I refuse to drink this anymore and become disappointed anytime I see someone whom I respect with a bottle of this swill in hand.
