...and now let me explain myself...

I've borrowed a little from other news sites, I've taken a lot from the previous Category Suggestions thread, and I've left Sport well alone for others to argue that one out... Apart from a general Extreme Sports category which is needed :)

From the top, I've added Literature into Arts to replace the Books section under Entertainment, it just seems more fitting to me. For want of a better word, I've added Culture to Arts too, to encompass all the other arts out there, and museums and galleries and stuff!

To Entertainment, I've renegated Humor to a new parent category that we'll come to in a bit...

Food & Drink, should maybe be a sub category of another, not sure which though; Entertainment? Science? World?

Health, pretty much the same, a few people have suggested it, but I think it should be a sub category somewhere... Probably under science?

Money has been added to cather together Business and Bargains... Maybe Politice, War and Religion too! (can I get away with saying that?)

Natural World houses three new, much needed and much requested categories; Weather I'm not too sure of, but I'm thinking it would include news about the force of mother nature... Earthquakes, Tsumais, etc.

Science? Another category that's had much discussion. I'm still quite unsure about the sub categories here, I believe we need a space category though. History is there because there's been a number of story that would technically fall under Archaeology, but Archaeology as it's own category is a bit restrictive.

Sports? Nuff said... Fight it out amongst yourselves ;-)

Stuff now homes Humor and Weird, and welcomes Web Videos into the party, for all those GoogleTube links.

In Jax's 'Most Submitted to Categories', Technology was up near the top so I think should be cut up a little... But I cut it up a lot anyway... Most of it speaks for itself, Home Entertainment is for that 100" Plasma TV, Digital Audio for the new Red iPod, Mobile for the latest SonyEricsson phone, Windows Vista stories could go either into Software or Humor, above, your call ;-) Games Consoles is here to take that strain off of the Games section in Entertaiment and to try to keep all stories about them in one place.

Travel has the Cars category that's been requested, as well as a Holidays sub-category that I'm just not to sure of... It's just that having only one sub-category seems a little pointless? I realise I've duplicated the Culture from Arts, but it's a different kind of Culture...

World gathers together the remaining categories that fit under the heading.

So what do we think? This, obviously, is only my view of what I think would work and suit everybody. I think the important thing is to make sure similer stories are grouped; if somebody comes onto the site and wants to read as much about the PS3 as possible, then they should all be in the same place, not scattered about in Technology, Games, Bargains (if you could call the price a bargain!).
Everybody, feel free to cut and paste the tree above and make whatever changes you deem necessary. I'm still left with lots of questions about this and I know there's plenty of changes to be made to my suggestion.

I know.
Why not change the name of the sports section to 'American sports'
Might make that click a little less dissaponting to the rest of the world.

Alright that was a bit sarky.
But seriously. The sports section really gives the impression that this is a site for Americans only. The thing you need to remember about American sports is that they are only big in America. Its weird that this isnt taken into account on a site of this nature.
I click on every link in this place but I just dont bother with sport because the section is completely irrelevant to me even though I love sport - whats that all about.

And please dont ignore me again Galoot. I think ive put enough effort into this to at least get an answer.

Yeeeaah... That's kinda why I wanted to ignore the Sports category. I'm not a sporty person really, but I'm with you here. The only country in the world where football isn't played with a round ball is America. Now I'm not Denouncing American Football as a sport... Well... No more than I would denounce Football as a sport... But it should be labelled as the world knows it, American Football.

And that's all I'm going to say on the matter :-p

To be fair to the American sport fans I have even called football, soccer. (Something that makes me physically puke)
Please take into account that Football (Soccer) is bigger than all the American sports on that list put together. In fact, so is boxing.
The sports section as it stands is a wee bit biased.

Regarding the sports catagory, I know Icepigs wants subcatagories for every team, but I don't buy it. In fact, Yanks/Sox needs to go.

As for the sport with the round ball, how about we call that "Futbol"? :)

Plime is a pliable tree of interesting links, cultivated and pruned by everyone. Be sure to read the FAQs, they can be found below among the links to the other categories.

Thats actually my point.
Globally the word football means football and nobody confuses it with American football - except Americans. The word itself derived from the fact that the two main tools in the sport are the foot and the ball. (Ball officially meaning spherical - not oval)

How about we call the sport with the stupid shoulder pads and helmets 'Puff-ball'

:D Only joking.

One more thing. I just had a look at the betting thing icepigs has going.
We have a similar thing called fantasy football, also global, which would make a great addition to the sports forums.
I have to admit, looking at that thread, that im a little jealous cos it is good fun.
Surely im being fair.

Ignore you again? I didn't realize I'd ignored you before. You have my apologies for making you feel that way.

I don't have the keys to the Plime castle. I'm not an "admin" here. There are no admins here, only users who gain or lose trust points based on the rating other users give them. My rating is not permanent. I can lose points as easily as you can gain. In fact, I wouldn't be surprised to see us swap ratings over time, as you participate more than I do lately. I'm a user like everyone else.

As I said in a different thread, I won't add categories or restructure the tree until jax tells me it's okay to do so. He specifically asked me not to.

As jax said in a different thread, everyone will soon be able to more easily add categories to the tree.

Ok.
No need for any apology at all, I didnt mean it like that.

I obviously missed you saying that in a different thread, I just thought you could add to the tree. Apologies.

It is a valid point though.
Just one global sport would be great. Or even extreme sports like BrightonCub suggested. Just something that is a little bit wider so to speak.

Actually scrap that. I'll wait. :)

Why am I dragging myself into the sports discussion... I hate sports! But, MisterC, you hit the nail on the head; taking category's down to an individual team level is nothing short of ridiculous! Not only would we end up with thousands of categories, but on the slim chance they were all populated with stories on a regular basis they would take over the site and everything else would dwarf in comparison!

I do understand that for the time being the tree is how it is and can't be changed. But I figured that as Jax has expressed that it will soon be open for configuration we should be taking the 'Suggested Categories' thread to the next level and working out what we want to do with it.

Ignoring Sports for the time being, what have people got to say on the rest of my suggestion? Is it too much? Is it not enough? Do things need renaming?

I think you could scrap "natural world" because that will be included in science, which could also include "weather" and "environment"

Also I think we could do without "games consoles" under "technology." because that will be covered in games. A lot of people post net games so I think that could be a section under games on its own. Something like..

+games
-internet games
-console
-pc

That's just a couple suggestions I'll modify/add more whenever I get a chance.

I thought it might be a good idea to have 'playable games' or 'live games' as a branch.
Like videos, Im certain at some point they are going to have to be sectioned off from the information articles.

For now though im leaving off my want for tree changes. May as well wait to see what jax has got planned with this new way of adding.

I must say im intreagued.

Well, as for the question about American Sports vs. the rest of the world.... once this tree takes off, we'll be starting plime.co.uk.

Every forest starts with a single tree. :)

But yes, I'll be opening up the ability for more people to change the tree structure shortly.

I skipped all the comments, no time... hope I didn't miss anything, but would love to have a food/drink section added. Like Jax said... it's a tree that grows!

p p p plime.co.uk!!!!!

Wooooooooooopiieeeeee. Solution of the century methinks. I knew we could add new lanuages but didnt realise it would have cause the sites to have different trees.

Will the sites be totally separate from each other or will there still be ways to interact?

Edit -
Thats a thought, will the users from the UK keep the ranks they have earned so far or will it all start from scratch?
I only ask as there is a few things I would like to start in some forums but I may as well wait if this is the case.

You'll keep your rankings and the sites will all be intertwined. The only real difference is the default category tree that displays to you, but you could even access the plime.com category tree from within plime.co.uk easily.
