WarGames, that classic 1980's movie is being remade. They are labeling it a sequel, but really it is just a remake with "terrorism" substituted for the cold war.

I mean they can't even be creative enough to come up with an actual sequel, perhaps including some of the original actors. No, they have to use the same plot. They will use the success of the original to sucker people in.

The trailer does not look good. If you want to see it, it's up on the normal sites. I won't post it here.

Instead I will give you two clips from the original and far better movie:

"Wouldn't you prefer a good game of chess?"

The ending scene.
Obviously this is a spoiler if for some strange odd reason you've never seen the movie:

What do you think of the planned remake of Blake's 7?

Sadly, I have never seen an episode of that series and there is no DVD set for the US.

I've heard it was a good series. Was it, or is it more of a love for nostalgia talking?

I really don't get how they are going to turn that into something with terrorism.

Are they going to make someone play Command and Conquer: Generals as the GLA connected to some mind controlled suicide bombers?

I never saw Blake's 7 the first time round (too young) but I've watched some of the re-runs and I gotta say it's pretty damn good IMO. It's pretty cheesy but no more than any other program from the same era.

I'm generally against re-makes of classic programs/films but I think that Blake's 7 would probably do well as a remake.

Blakes 7 was an absolute unmissable institution in the UK when I was growing up. It was unbelievable special effects sci-fi gold. The characters were great, the plots were exciting - it was one of the best things on TV.

I managed to find an episode on youtube a while back and it turns out that it was actually a bit crap :)

the sims??? i can almost see the script for monopoly and candyland and that, but the sims??? the sims is a simulation of life; movies are a simulation of life; a simulation of a simulation ... if that isn't recursion, i don't know what is.

This is an epidemic. The Birds?? Come on.

I was sick this Sunday afternoon and I made this list out of boredom:

[Top 30 grossing films of 2007]

Spider-Man 3 -- Sequel of adaptation
Shrek the Third -- Sequel
Transformers -- Adaptation
Pirates of the Caribbean: At World's End -- Sequel of adaptation
Harry Potter and the Order of the Phoenix -- Sequel and adaptation
I Am Legend -- Remake
The Bourne Ultimatum -- Sequel
National Treasure: Book of Secrets -- Sequel
Alvin and the Chipmunks -- Adaptation
300 -- Adaptation
Ratatouille
The Simpsons Movie -- Adaptation
Wild Hogs
Knocked Up
Juno
Rush Hour 3 -- Sequel
Live Free or Die Hard -- Sequel
Fantastic Four: Rise of the Silver Surfer -- Sequel of adaptation
American Gangster
Enchanted
Bee Movie
Superbad
I Now Pronounce You Chuck and Larry
Hairspray -- Adaptation
Blades of Glory
Ocean's Thirteen -- Sequel of remake
Ghost Rider -- Adaptation
Evan Almighty -- Sequel
Meet the Robinsons
Norbit

Yes, most movies are adaptations, but I'm counting adaptations of very well known sources.

Hollywood knows what sells. The top ten (along with about half of the rest) had a significant fanbase of the subject before the movie was released.

I wouldn't say so, or only in the most extremely loose way.

Isn't it about snow white (or whichever fairy princess) being sent to that horrible land of New York?

I have no problems with actual sequels. Sequels can be great when done well. It is remakes that are a problem for me personally.

If they were able to make a reasonable sequel to WarGames it might be enjoyable. Instead they are using the same exact plot.

Kid hacks into a computer. He thinks he's playing a game when in actuality it is all too real.

Only difference is that the computer was set up as a spyware program by the government to catch terrorist agents.

I wonder if it will end the same way as the original?

Oh me too, but I do think the extreme number of sequels says something about the direction that Hollywood is heading. Their not taking as many chances with thier big budgets and relying more on the "sure thing".

Look at the list again. Out of the originals: Wild Hogs, Chuck and Larry, Blades of Glory, and Norbit all relied almost solely on starpower. Ratatouille, Enchanted, Bee Movie, and Meet the Robinsons relied on kids movie marketing. Juno was very low-budget.

That leaves 10% that were risks taken by studios. This has been going on forever to some degree, but movies have become far more calculated in recent years.

And oddly enough, I'm ok with all of them as long as they're decent entertainment. But so many don't even try, and I'm afraid we're headed in a bad direction.

The Bourne Ultimatum -- Sequel
Both of these are adaptations as well.

I Am Legend is a 1954 science fiction novel by Richard Matheson. (This is the 3rd time it's been made into a movie)

The Bourne Ultimatum is the third Jason Bourne novel written by Robert Ludlum and a sequel to The Bourne Supremacy

In my definition, cinemization = adaption. The change in format alone warrants an adaptation label.

Edit: wait, did I misinterpret this? If it's a shot at the disparity in quality between the tv show and the movie, I wholeheartedly agree.

Yeah, I know.

I guess I shouldn't have said I'm only counting adaptations of "very well known sources", but rather "sources with a huge existing fanbase".

Both of those are fairly well-known books, but they don't have nearly the following of something like Harry Potter, Lord of the Rings, or any number of comic books.

Sorry for derailing your thread, 2mu.
