« davbob : It wouldn't bother me so much but for some reason the autocomplete goes cross-user profile. Stuff that Claire looks at on her user profile comes onto my autocomplete and vice-versa. Obvious reasons why I don't like it.
My Ubuntu came with FF2. I suppose I really should get round to updating it but to be fair I'm on vista most of the time playing games. I know I can run games under WINE but to be fair Crysis will only run on low settings whereas with Vista I can get it to run on high. Dual booting or VPC?
I went with VirtualBox (from Sun) and I have Vista as the main OS since I've got so much stuff that wouldn't work on Ubuntu (i.e. MS Office 07 and Adobe PS and Flash) and 36 gigs of crap that I just don't want to bother backing up but I don't want to lose.
I'd never played around with a virtual machine but if you crank up the RAM on it, it's really just like having a real linux box.
The really really cool part is I can just create another virtual machine and try out any kind of OS I want. If I don't like it... delete... and all my stuff is still there.
I'm getting teary eyed at just how cool it is.

I use Wubi.
Nice little app that sets aside a bit of your HD without having to partition it. It runs like a dual boot but so much easier to set up.
It's all Pocksuckets fault that I use it in the first place he bullied me into Linux and now I'm stuck with it.

I was always like "bah, linux... what's the big deal?" Now I know. It's almost like being given a peek into the matrix, no?

« davbob : Dunno, Opera is pretty adaptable too, the only thing that lets it down is that some stupid people out there design sites that it can't open. Can you skin Opera though, because I downloaded it a few months back to give it a try and it looked like "Browser for Beginners".
I'm just in love with all the extensions and add-ons that people make for FF. I tried some of the Opera widgets and I didn't think they were up to much.

I find Opera to be a complete POA in terms of useability, but appreciate that without it there probably wouldn't be Firefox, so doff my cap to it accordingly.

I find that dropping it into conversations with the IT fellas at work makes jaws drop when they come round to change the home page on everyones system and realise that I;m running firefox on my work pc then the conversation turns along the line of: " I'm running vista and Linux on my home system and oh yeah quad core rocks and the new AMD Phenom can be overclocked to 3gHz" They kinda smile nod then go off and try to look intelligent to the other numbnuts that work with me.

I love it when that happens.
The best is when you call up IT with a problem and they start walking you down all the things you've already done before you called them. You're like, "Dude. The reason I'm calling you is because I've done all that already..."

« vexingmodstwo : Dual booting or VPC?
I went with VirtualBox (from Sun) Spooky - I installed VirtualBox last night and am just playing with it now - creating an XP image on my laptop. It probably won't stay, but I'm trying to convince someone who just can't cope with the "don't go to shady websites and install malicious crap" restrains you get with windows. I'm thinking of giving him a virtual XP install as a safety net. And if he does balls that up, I can always just restore the image.
Plus there's the potential headspin moments for people who don't fully understand the way these things work. XP running on one face of the cube then open things out..

Speaking of the cube, where do I get that?

« vexingmodstwo : Hardy Heron (8.04) Should just be a matter of going to System -> Preferences -> Appearance and then the Visual Effects tab. Choose your setting from there.
I've not got round to upgrading to 8.04 yet - just lazy - so I don't know the ins and outs of it yet but I'd suspect that this will give you the basics; cube, wobbly windows, etc. but that you may have to install the advanced effects for more stuff.

enable the Compiz control with

Thanks guys.

Further to what Davbob says above, I think the package for advanced controls is compizconfig-settings-manager.
I'm guessing that if you're setting up virtual machines then installing stuff through Aptitude isn't an issue, but if you want more guidance let me know.

Stick with it though and it will all click together.
Oh, on a side note, my virtual XP install is complete and not entirely unsurprisingly Microsoft are rejecting my absolutely genuine licence key.
If you ever find yourself missing that sort of Microsoft Advantage then try installing this.
