Something like this is what I was suggesting:

But with more kinds of art, of course.

Art is expression without limits. At least that is what it is to me. It's important because we need to grow our imaginations and expand them. What is the first thing cut in school budgets? ART! I know this first hand. The drama department was cut just after I finished high school. Ever see Mr. Holland's Opus? We would be robots without art in the world. We need it. No matter how you define it, it is needed.

Art is important to me because it keeps a lot of crazy people sane.

Art is not important to me because anything can be considered art.

Thank-you, that is just what I was going to say.

I agree; art is like beauty. It is in the eye of the beholder. I also think the definition of art is unique to every person.

I think art is important because it provides an opportunity to think or reflect about things from a different perspective.

The only way to answer this kind of question is when it is being asked of something that has a definite definition. If art truly is "in the eye of the beholder" then this question cannot be answered accurately. It would be the same as asking whether or not beauty is important in society.

To me, Art is something anyone could see, but it has a very personal impact.
It's feelings, memories, experience.
It's a unique take on something, because we all think differently, and everyone has been through so many different things.
It's evoking emotions, a private reaction.

I think you're having a hard time seperating personal opinion from facts of life. I didn't ask if it was important in society, I asked why or why not it is important to you. Collectively we may represent a society, but no one person speaks for us all.

Art is important to me because it gives us an opportunity to express ourselves in a less conventional manner.

Art is important to me because it allows people to express their opinions and gives others time to digest the information and reflect upon it.

Art is important to me because it is enjoyable to do.

I also think the definition of "art" varies greatly from person to person. You might call it beautiful, I might call it kitch. You might say it's ridiculous, I might say it's making a profound statement. I think the only definition that I would attach to art is "human-made."

« Mershaullk : That's something that I have spent some time thinking about. I think it would be easiest to just define art with subcategories in the way Kingdoms are defined by phylums, etc. in biology. Something like Art > Sculpting, Painting, Composing, Writing, etc. (I'm not sure if I can get this point across clearly without visual aid.)
My definition of art is almost the exact opposite of this. It refuses to be categorized like that.

Art is one of the most important concepts we have as higher thinking beings. Without it, we would have no way to examine ourselves as individuals, as a nation, as a race of people, as a species...as anything for that matter.

How else do we do that? Art is the way that we are able to hold a mirror up to ourselves.

It shows up our beauty, our ugliness, the beauty and ugliness around us and all the other emotions, observations, concepts, etc. Without it, we would live very dark lives indeed.

An art revolution has preceded every important technological revolution in the history of man-kind. Dude who invented the wheel had his creativity stimulated by the dude who painted buffalo on the cave wall and on into perpetuity.

Without art we would be living under piles of sticks sucking our thumbs and wailing for mommy.

I've tried writing four different reasons why art is important to me, and nothing seems to be coming out right.

I love art, mainly in the form of music and writing...

So I love music because it's been one of the biggest influences in my life, and one of the things I can control, organize, and always have.

As for writing, I usually find things that sum up some thought, feeling or fact so perfectly, and it's just amazing...

Sorry for the shoddy wording there... I'm not too good with expressing my thoughts.
