OK I was going to go with this because it is a very good visual aid as to what a shithole my home town is.



BUT then I found THE perfect picture:



This is perfect for two reasons: Accuracy and attitude.

Accuracy because this is what the place looks like 8 months out of the year. The other 4 months it is hot and muggy as hell. You drown in your own sweat if you stand still for more than 2 minutes.

Attitude because this picture EXACTLY describes the basic psychology of the city. When you are at a bus stop and a perfect stranger asks you what time it is...you kindly give him the time. Not where I come from. If some stranger asks you anything, the default internal response from a native is "Who is this assh*le and why is he talking to me?"

You think I lie? Well look hard at this picture. Then realize where I found it...this horribly depressing photo is found on none other than at the top of the local University's COUNSELING CENTER. You cannot make this stuff up. What better photo to put on a counseling center than something that makes you want to jump off the nearest bridge? Well not this bridge of course. Though you MIGHT kill yourself trying to cross it, so I guess it does make sense in a twisted sort of way. How appropriate.

So then, here we are.

I'm gonna use this photo I took of the beach we live next to. Where I live is a village but the town I live near is a huge surfing community and the area is famous for it's beaches and surfing. So I'm gonna go with a nice beach pic for my avatar.

The Cahaba River runs through my town about a quarter of a mile from my house.

Oscar Wilde wrote The Importance of Being Earnest while living here and named one of the character after the town.
