«imnotyoo : I hadn't noticed, but then again, I don't watch the news, I don't listen to news radio, I don't have a water cooler to hear about news, and I'm not a news tab regular.
«bunnysutra : Even after a good year or so here, I still feel like a newb. I have only posted a few things, and probably in the wrong place, too. -- I'm still finding hide-ee-holes on here that I didn't know existed.
Like just now, someone posted a photo - and another member pointed out that there was a thread for one off photos. I did not know that.
I have seen a lot more "public correcting" lately. In a way, it's good, keeps things on track, but I'm afraid to do it wrong, so I typically don't post unless I'm certain I've done my due dilligence.
I feel the exact same way! Typically, I just comment on the links posted and chill out in the forums. The chatroom was my home, but ever since things got hectic, the forums is my home now!
I think a big part of it, for me, is that every other post here and elsewhere in the internets seems to pertain to your nation's upcoming election. Plime seems full of US-election posts lately, and that's one of the reasons I'm just reading the newspaper instead of coming here all of the time. I'd like to know who wins it, but other than that I really don't care and the bizillion news posts on it just annoy me.
I only like to post things I find really interesting, and I usually don't care if they get upvoted a ton or not. If I have some more free time in the near future, I'll try and find some internet gems.
Though I'd like to add that I think rambler's "ghana news update" is an internet gem in itself!
Plime is an editable wiki community where users can add and edit weird and interesting links. Users earn karma when other users vote on their actions. The more karma you have, the more power you have at Plime.
for those of you who were around at the inception of Plime... you know how awesome it was.. we were all pouring in our strange finds and scouring deeper parts of the net to bring the weird, wild and just plain silly...
However, it wasn't long till Karma whores showed up and started copying ( I call it scraping ) news stories from other aggregators. We put up with it initially, because they were only copying the rare and interesting..
Now it has become a full fledged flood. And these people have amassed massive karma ratings.. Remember when a 30 wasn't even technically possible? Now every kid who dutifully scrapes stories for a few weeks becomes a 'power borker' here.
For those of you who know me, I'm sure you've noticed that I'm not around here much any more.. most of it has to do with these increasingly crass and blithe thieves.

I'm not bitter, just sad.
There's a difference between Hoosker addressing the issue in a civil manner and you constantly moaning and being rude in the comments of someone's post. In the link you provided above you were rude and sarcastic to TT for him posting a story that was extremely popular with a lot of people on here.
How can you be rude and sarcastic to someone who regularly contributes to plime when you yourself offer very little?
I also miss the good ol' plime... But all good things become popular and then change.
Have you ever loved an underground band and then they got radio play and and their music evolved? I've felt that way about a lot of awesome things. If something relatively unknown rocks, it'll become popular and then it won't be as great. Que sera.
Another thing Plime does have you can't get anywhere else is genuine discussion in the comments section of a post. Typically comments sections are filled with one liners, people just waiting their turn to speak, and comments generally go unread.
I can't count the number of good conversations I've had in the comments on Plime.
«coldbladed : The thing is, everything we post, by the nature of the site, is already posted somewhere else. So yeah, its rehashed stuff. The only truly original/novel content would come from blogs, personal sites, or posting stories directly to the site (like the forums). And we have a moratorium on all those things (forum option aside).
Well that isn't 100% accurate.
You can't post your own blog. If it is a news story link to the news article as the headline. You can include a link to a blog - especially if the blog has a good selection of comments within the description.
That being said, you are right, everything we post here will have been or will be posted elsewhere. That is the nature of the game. Very little will be "unique" and if is it, it won't stay unique for long. =end of reply=
The only way to post things that are unique would be to post things that very few people are interested in, things that fit a very narrow niche.
To those who think Plime is not "unique" enough, How about giving us an example of what you deem to be worthy, what you would like to see more of.
The links here haven't been unique as long as I've been here. I doubt that they ever will be. It is the discussions, the comments, that make Plime stand out.
The only thing that has changed is it used to be strongly requested that we do not just copy & paste a description from the article to use as a description. That we use our own words (without editorializing). If the description could be entertaining so much the better. That is a minor change over all and is still done sometimes.
I agree with 2many, Although I do love the unique stuff we get here on Plime, sometimes I like seeing a news story just to see what the reaction is.
We are lucky in that we have a comment system that receives very little spam, and even when we get a trash comment we get the satisfaction of downvoting it. On the other hand, when we read a comment that we think is really great we can upvote it, instead of just posting a pointless "I agree" comment...on that note, I just realized this comment is pointless.

«jaxomlotus : Why not make every day have a theme? That would make Plime unique, fun and interesting.
Seriously.
I seriously like this idea. Though with some caveats.
I think it's ok to have the average news posted here. Maybe there's someone that didn't know about Kennedy's brain tumor and if nothing else such stories give everyone a chance to comment. I do think people should search well before posting though, particularly if it's a story that's been on one of the major news outlets. Too many dupes of common news occur.
My other caveat is that the theme not be constantly sophomoric. A day of poop and fart posts will put me off this site. There's enough of that in the forum already (and nearly every Friday). I do think we could do better than that.
What dolly said, plus the themes would have to be something that would lend itself to interesting articles.
As an example of a poor one was the Monty Python theme a few months back. Yes we all love Monty Python, but every single post made during that theme was old, very old, very very old which is only to be expected considering how long since python disbanded.
We need to all brainstorm on themes that would bring forth new and interesting links.
I think having theme's for a day would make it challenging as well. But I think it would be interesting to try running a theme for 2-3 days, particularly if we can develop a list, sort of like the hot seat. That way new themes can be suggested and added, and people can plan a bit in advance. The only problem with that might be that someone would sit on a story, waiting for the theme time, only to be trumped by someone who isn't waiting.
Maybe start by using the groups? IE, Arts, Bargains, Business, etc.
