«unzercharlie : My parents want me to get rid of Sadie because they're afraid she's going to chew some kids face off.
So ferocious!
There are little yap dogs that are not good with kids. I'll have to post a pic of my uncle's daughter with the neighbor Pit Bull when I get home tonight. It's the best pic to promote anti-BSL and to show the Pit Bull's are not kiddie eaters.
«unzercharlie : I'm not putting my dog in sissy clothes. I've got two little girls that live next door, probably 2 and about 5 years old, they come outside when I've got her out in the backyard and they come running over to play fetch with Sadie and pull her tail, Sadie doesn't mind as long as she's getting some attention. I take her to the dog park and have friends bring their dogs over every once in a while. She's a good dog, I still keep her put up if my nephews come over just because she romps in the house and I don't want her to knock anyone over. My parents cannot be swayed though, pit bulls and all breeds of pit bull are cold blooded killers as far as they're concerned.
Man, mine are very clumsy too. Every day I say I "Run with the Bulls" when I let them out in the AM.
I cringe when they come up from behind me. They do their crazy bullie runs and I am sure one will put me in the hospital for knee replacement one of these days!
Lilo, our fat one, walked in front of me one day and I tripped over her, with her invisible fence collar in my hand...I got shocked, hurt my knee and fell right over her...I was laughing and crying at the same time....what a sight that must of been.
They seem to stop in front of me all the time. I walk like Frankenstien, dragging my feet instead of picking them up, so I can move them out of the way. My thighs are ripped!!

Some friends of mine had a Rottweiller, full grown male called Cody. He was the sweetest, nicest dog ever. He loved kids and loved to play. His problem wasn't that he was aggressive, but just his enormous size. He was dangerous to kids just because in his enthusiam, he would knock them about like rag dolls. I'm a big guy and in those days was 6'4", 235 and I would get a huge workout whenever we played in the backyard. They gave him an old garden hose and Cody and I would would play tug o'war and he would drag my ass all over the place. So in some cases, it isn't aggressiveness, just size that makes them inadvertantly dangerous.
But that holds true for any dog. Orion, my last dog, was a pointer--75 pounds of solid muscle. He was turned in as a pup for being mean, when in truth, he was the gentlest dog around, he just hadn't learned he was big yet. He'd charge around and knock kids flying. He figured out when he was about 3 years old to be careful, and he was so careful around kids after that.
«Marli : Currently Levi has a nasty ear infection, and I need to wash his ears twice a day and then apply drops. It hurts him so badly the poor guy shakes. But he licks my face while I'm doing it. That's why I love these dogs. Levi will be the last one I own while I'm a renter, but when I own my own house they very well might be the only breed for our family.
Ditto for McGruff. He has has an ongoing ear infection since he was a baby and we have to clean his ears daily too. He doesn't like getting them cleaned, but when we're done, he thanks us.
When I was younger I worked in a grooming shop as a bather/brusher. We had quite a few clients so you can imagine how many breeds I dealt with.
The only ones I ever had trouble with were the Chows. The ones I dealt with seemed to be very unpredictable. One second they were fine and friendly, the next moment they were snipping or growling at me. As a precaution we would muzzle them before we started.
As far as Pits or Rotts go, I treat them as I do people. As long as they are cool with me, I am cool with them.
My daughter was mauled by one of these:
I know that every single Akita is not going to try to rip my daughter's face off but because it happened to my kid and it was quite bloody and unprovoked, it is hard for me to even think about letting anyone I know near one. I am not saying it is right, but that situation made me afraid of them.
My apartment complex allows us to have dogs but there is a list of dogs that are strictly forbidden:
Doberman Rotts Pitts and Bulldogs of any sort
I asked how a bulldog made it onto the list and they said that the list was just a list of mean dogs... When I did the research showing that bulldogs are not mean and have a bad rep they simply would not change the list. I even talked to someone from the corporate office. That person told me, "This is a list we get from an animal shelter, if you can get the shelter to change their list we'll change ours."
She wouldn't give out the name of the animal shelter...

No animal shelter is going to have a list of "mean breeds." You can't stereotype dogs the same way you can't stereotype people.

I would call every animal shelter in your area and ask them if they give out lists of "mean" dogs.
If they do, and name the dogs you stated, I would then ask why Chihuahuas did not make their list and tell them they are discriminating against certain breeds and if there are no breed specific laws in your area, that could be an issue.
Idiots.
I know in some areas that Pit Bulls are only available from shelters to approved rescues only. And there are some shelters that just euthanize them and do not put them up for adoption or contact rescues. Total and complete BS! It makes me very angry!
My guess is that someone in the corporation that had watched too many movies/cartoons made the list themselves and that was the BS answer the gave me to shut me up. The fact that she wouldn't give up the name of the shelter was very telling.
my S/O wouldn't let me get a purebred pit. the dog i fell in love with at the pound just so happens to be PART pit, but it is not in her papers. it just says she is a "border collie/heeler" mix. i can even get away with telling people just that. the first time i saw her, i didn't really realize it either and i LOVE, LOVE, LOVE pits. she does have a pit-ish block head, though, and i think it's fairly obvious she's got some pit when she smiles. i DO get crap from certain people who look at her and see it right away.
as much as i adore pit bulls, it's a huge liability. if a frickin labradoodle starts a fight with a pit, it's automatically the pit's fault. yes, people discriminate. yes, people are afraid. i couldn't afford to get a purebred partly because of that and also because i'm a renter. i would inevitably have had problems finding places to rent. it's hard enough to find a place that will allow pets, period.
it is a sad reality. i didn't realize bullies got discriminated against too, mama. every time i see one i just want to hug it. they're so damn cute and happy looking. :)
«horsefeathers : ...I would then ask why Chihuahuas did not make their list ...
the only dog i have ever been repeatedly attacked by was a chihuahua. they can be vicious little f**kers. i was between the ages of 4 and 7, and it was TERRIFYING every time it happened. it was my aunt's friend's dog. she had to lock him in the bedroom whenever we came over, but sometimes he'd get out and terrify the bejesus out of us.

I hate that. McGruff once stopped a dog fight by separating the dogs and pinning the aggressive one down by the neck. He wasn't puncturing the neck, just honestly restraining the dog (the dog was going after Yogurt's puppy friend). Most of the people around acted like McGruff was attacking some innocent dog. It was absolute bulls**t. It was like a white guy beating up a kid and a black guy intervening and restraining the white guy and then the black guy gets accused of attacking the white guy.
