As they owner of 3 German Shepard's I've seen the ignorance of people towards large breeds of dogs,my dogs are very sweet ,but it is a very bad idea to act aggressive towards anyone in their "pack".My dogs are well trained and loved so they love in return. I think it is all about the owner and the treatment the animal receives.

oops double post !

Her cuteness has actually got us in trouble because people think that a cute dog is going to be so gentle etc. She likes to wrestle other dogs so when little kids approach her she bumps them and knocks them over. She doesn't really understand that a little kid isn't a play mate.
Looks like quite a drinker.

« Maven : It always confuses me why Rottweilers have the repuation they do. They're HERDING dogs.
Kinda like Pit Bulls starting out as "the poor man's horse"?

They were bred to be all muscle and to be strong. Then some corrupted jackass thought it would be fun to make these super-tough dogs fight. Mr. Jackass abused and neglected some Pit Bulls and got them to fight and told his friends about it. Fighting Pit Bulls soon became a wide-spread "sport". The media caught wind of these Pit Bull fights and promptly informed the citizens.

..I'm tired of typing.

When was the last time you heard of a Golden Retriever attacking some kid?
Never, because it wouldn't make the evening news.

No, but my dog is. That's why your dog impressed me.

« horsefeathers : We are in Pennsylvania. The Rottweiler rescue I volunteer with is in Maryland but she has lots of contacts. I can do some checking for you to see if she knows any rescues that can take Marley. She is very particular and only deals with other reputable rescues that she trusts completely. What state are you in now??
I'm in Florida, but will be moving up to Ohio soon. I really don't want to lose him but what else can I do?

« unzercharlie:No animal shelter is going to have a list of "mean breeds." You can't stereotype dogs the same way you can't stereotype people.
You'd be surprised...

I work at an animal rescue (primarily dogs), and many shelters out there, also veterinarians, supposed dog lovers and even other rescues refuse care to animals that they consider to be aggressive breeds. our rescue of course is there for animals who need help, regardless of their appearance or ancestry. we're very pit friendly, but the downside is that they are so hard to place in homes...so the majority of these 'aggressive breed' dogs will end up living out their lives with us, because so many people refuse to give them a chance.

pits, chows, dobermans, rottweilers, akitas, etc...they all get the s**t end of the stick.

it's a sad and shameful truth.

Vancouverites seem to like dressing up their little dogs and taking them out in public.

They are also scared of my big black dog. I don't know what my dog is, besides a farm mutt. He's smart, gentle and great, though.

While I agree there's breed-specific racism, people will judge a dog just based on its physical appearance. This bothers me, because I know my Norm is smarter than most of the dogs in the park (even though he is "Norm, and he is from Canmore, too.")

That was Levi after we stopped going to Denver when they passed their BSL.

I'll PM you my email address. Send me some pics of him and I'll see what I can do.

The only thing you could have done was told the property management is that he is a mutt of unknown breeding. Don't know what they would have done when they see him, depends how much he looks like a Rottie or a Shepard.

I'm scared of pitbulls.. my neighbor used to breed and fight them in the back yard and always kept them up on the balcony and whenever we played outside they always ran across barking at us constantly.. but they were on the 2nd story so we didn't really complain..

but one day the all white one thay they called dynamite jumped off the balcony and landed on my front porch.. breaking like 3 of its legs.. I'm just glad it wasn't able to get to me and my brother..

However one of my sisters mo has a pitbull and its the biggest thickest dog I have ever seen in person, but it's also the cutest and nicest and most playful.. my brother refuses to ever go near one and basically freezes up if one is around, he had a bad experience when we were playing in our backyard one day.. trying to hop a fence to get a basketball ended up gettin nipped on the ankle..

But yea.. detroit makes people scared of pits and rotts, not blaming it on the dogs.. but some people don't know how to raise animals.. or are just raising them for home protection

I grew up with Pit Bulls. We had Max, Bull, her pup Nakita, and Rex. Plus we've had other dogs, usually of half Pit breed/half mutt. In my life, I've only been bit by one dog, and it wasn't ours and it wasn't a labeled "vicious" breed.

I was riding my bike, being chased by my neighbors 3 dogs. 1 was a yip yip breed, 1 was a Lab, and 1 was a Pit. It was the damn lab that bit me on the arse. It really shocked me, as these dogs have always chased me, I was never snapped at before. I have no clue why the lab bit me, and yes, it freaking hurt. You get bit on the arse by a dog....right in the damn muscle.

I still have issues today, and I was bit back in 95.

come to think of it ... most of my bad experiences with dogs, was with very small dogs ... toy terriers, dachunds, the like. thankfully, i haven't been seriously hurt by any dog, but the small dogs were still rather aggressive and snappy. i like weiner dogs, but i'd never get one because that's mostly the breed that'll try to eat my feet in a very not-cute manner.

and yet ... the only dogs that actually intimidate me are the really big dogs ("aggressive breed" or not), even though i haven't had a bad experience with them. seeing any huge dog running towards me gives me the bad shakes.

Chicken :P
(bad joke I know...)

The only dog I've been seriously bitten by was an Old English Sheepdog. I was 5, she bit me in the neck and barely missed my jugular vein. I cried when my dad got the vet to put her down the next day :(
