jaxomlotus: 5) At the end of the day, at midnight, the theme changes. There are no winners (well, yes there is a stats page, but so what). Well, actually. If you impress me, maybe I will make a trophy page for users who win a theme. Something permanent you can take back to your smarmy blind date and really impress him/her.
For the love of everything holy, please do not do that! It will seriously cause so much more drama than these oh-so-controversial downvotes do. Definitely a bad idea.

Future forum thread:
WhineyB1tch: This is such crap! I said something exactly like (insert high level username here) the week before he did, and he got a trophy and I didn't! He already has 24 trophies and I haven't gotten one! Such bulls**t! You guys worship high level users. Etc, etc, etc...

Cookie what?

Jax, it's your house. We just play here. I think that some changes would be good, force people to think. But, I also see the value of having a "Treasure Hunt" tab and a "News" tab. Putting news in the forums instead of in the News area would be confusing, and a lot of good conversations and such would be pushed off the main pages without being seen.

And I think having overlapping themes might be good--ie, runs for 36 hours from the time it's posted. That gives people a wider time slot to play and vote.

I'm all about trying out something new. There were a lot of folks who weren't keen on the FAF idea, either.
Let's just all keep in mind that no plan survives contact with the enemy, and that there will be some bumps and hiccups. Bring it on!

I like it. Personally I like to shake things up sometimes. I hear alot of plimates here saying that they can't post stuff they find because it's "alien day" I think sure post it away but be creative with the title and summary make it relevant to "alien day". This is one thing IMO that has diminished greatly. I know I don't post alot of stuff but when I do I always try to make a witty headline that makes it sound more interesting than it really is, too many users are simply copying the story itself and posting it as the summary. Now what is going to make me click on that link... Nothing, I just read it.
This little experiment might just get our creative juices flowing again.

AFAIK Autumn and Jax Lotus are not related. For a long time when I was new to Plime I wondered about that too. But I was afraid I would look stupid if I asked.

But now, I make myself look stupid here daily, so I don't care anymore about asking questions.

Kudos to you!

Making a humorous, witty, clever headline to a story to try and make it fit in with the given theme of the day/week doesn't change the content of the post so it's a pretty pointless exercise.

The point myself and a few others were making is that a news tab for posts unrelated to the given "theme" of that particular time would be, in effect, the best of both worlds.

A place for submitting the random, ADD, wacky, off-the-cuff, spontaneous items a lot of us do now and a tab/main page whatever, for the new, super-spangley theme of the day/week.

Indeed...

"Thy NASA didst discovere a new planete such as is orbiting Pluto...God be praised"

Just doesn't fit in with "Olde English Wednesday"

yes, such gimmicks - and god forbid the inevitable talk-like-a-pirate headlines would actually detract from the site and make it look less attractive as a place for intelligent conversation and stories.

This conversation is making me want to say this...
Plime is not as interesting as it once was. I used to spend all my time in the news tabs. Reading interesting, quirky, and controversial articles. I enjoyed the intelligent and respectful dialog that occurred in the comments. As time has gone on the news tab has become somewhat of a race to post before someone else gets to it first and as such has lost much of its allure for me and I have migrated to the forums. Again, time has passed and the forums are beginning to change. Gone are the days of insightful and respectful topical conversation and now we have a plethora of "amusing" topics. I'm not saying that any of this is bad, just not what it once was. I have recently felt that I am wasting time here when I could/should be doing more constructive things. If Jax changes things up and it move Plime toward something... better than what it is (for me at least) I say go for it man. Plime is prunable. Sticking with the gardening metaphor...
Plime is a part of Jax's orchard. If Jax wants/needs to prune a tree to make it what he wants it to be then he should. If Jax wants to graft new branches on then he should. Personally I think that those of you who are going to complain are being quite presumptuous. Plime was created on Jax dime and Jax time. Let him do what he wants.

This is true. It will just make the place full of cheesy puns.

In general, I'm going to throw this one out again. Very simple thing to try. Change the name of the News tab.

Call it Stories.

Then people don't get it confused with Current Affairs.

I've attended many board meetings. Most successful corporations welcome new ideas and change...at least try them.

The companies that are calling me now with whimpers of slow growth, aiming their blame on recession and economy are the ones who never tried anything new, and instead, argued why new ideas wouldn't work before even attempting them.

The companies that are refusing to participate in a recession and are actually showing growth and profit are the other ones.

If you don't like the corporate analogy, then just think of your partner wanting to try something different...but your "comfortable" with the same ol crackers.

I say Boo to all of you comfortable with the same ol crackers.

nobody is complaining, we are discussing the concept of themes. We are having a roundtable talk about how best to implement such an idea, how to tweak it, whether it is sufficient on its own to carry a site or should there be more, etc, etc.

Yes, it is Jax's site. No one is being presumptuous that it will be ran the way we want, we are just discussing it.

I don't think any of us are saying we don't want change or that we don't want to see theme days/weeks or whatever. We are just brainstorming the best way to make it successful. i.e. change from daily themes to 3/week, allow the posting of non-theme articles, etc, etc

It is this discussion and others like it that makes plime stand out amongst the crowd.

The best way to reduce 'x' type of articles is to downvote them. People are going to post what is appreciated. If someone posts a news article and it doesn't get comments or upvotes - or worse is downvoted than those type of articles will decline.

Think of it as Evolution. The articles will evolve with the fittest - those the most successful in surviving the Plime enviroment being seen as the template to follow.

Personally, I am trying to post articles that are not on reddit/fark/et al, but are still interesting, and more importantly can still draw a conversation - even a debate.
