Banking

I'm new to the world of getting money, seeing as I started my first job about 2 weeks ago, and just received my first paycheck. So far, I've just been cashing it at local Business centers inside the HEB's/Walmarts, which led me to thinking. I need a bank account. So I ask plime:

What bank do you use, and what benefits does it have over other banks? Would you suggest me starting an account with this bank? Why/why not, and if not, what then?

I suggest a credit union. Usually much better percentage rates when you finally go to get a loan.

I'll have to go along with TP.. that is if you can join a credit union near you. I belong to one that's for state and local municipal employees. I'm not sure others are allowed to join. Perhaps someone can enlighten us on that.
Also.. the nice thing about the credit union is the no B.S. approach to banking. I'm not always inundated with credit card offers, life insurance crap and other things my old bank tried to sell me.

I am the last person to ask... I went with Bank of the West.... because I get a Bear on my checks and debit card.... yes I know that is retarded... but i love bears.

Dave Ramsey would b***h slap me if he knew that is why I have that account.

I belong to Bank of America and have never had any of that.

One credit union that will let anyone join Boeing Employees Credit Union (BECU). I don't know if there is one where you live tho.

Truthfully. I think most banks are the same, tho I would pick a big well-known bank. Small ones seem to add all kinds of crap fees to your account. In my experience anyway.

You want to go into a bank that will have a free checking to new customers. Get a savings account too and periodically dump money from your checking that you are not using into your savings. Use the savings as overdraft protection just in case. Make sure that they also offer online banking. If your new job offers direct deposit, sign up, most banks will give you free checking/savings with direct deposit. That way you will never have to go to the bank for anything.

I don't know if this is an option in the US of A, or whether you care, and I certainly can't offer you any advice, but if you do care about such things consider where your chosen bank will invest your money.

For example, do you want to be indirectly supporting Robert Mugabe and Zanu-PF?

If not, make sure your bank doesn't either.

I have a local bank for checking, but for savings, went with an online bank. Much better interest rates because they have no physical locations which means low to no overhead. I can transfer from my checking to my online savings all online. The online bank also offers a paperless checking account. No minimum balance etc. You get a debit/visa card just like a local checking, but the interest rate is so much better. If you need a paper check, they do it for you and send it. I have been thinking of using the online checking.

Make sure whatever bank you choose to use, is FDIC insured.

I use a bank that has:
- free checking (no direct deposit required)
- free checks for life
- one free NSW per year

WaMu.

So far, I have had no problems.

There are a lot of things to consider when selecting a bank. Will you do most of your transactions in person? What types of transactions do you expect to make? What's your goal--having your money secure, accessible, growing? Do you want to retain this bank for a long time (ie, during college, after college)?

I like credit unions, but often times, they are local, so not as convenient if you will be moving around much. The plus is that most will have online banking, and will readily transfer money from a local CU to yours, no matter what.

Wachovia is my favorite. I like credit unions too, but Wachovia seems to have better deals if you dont have a whole lot of money to play with.
It is especially good for students (for example: no minimum payment on the credit card and similar things.)

Traditional banks, in my experience, don't vary that much from bank to bank. They pretty much work the same. I've used a total of 6 banks in 2 states and never run into anything that made me think "Wow! This bank is better!"

The most important thing is to keep up on your checkbook, or your debit/credit transactions so you always have an accurate number to work with. Don't rely solely on internet banking or phone banking to verify your balances. I paid two bills by debit card on the 4th that still haven't come out of my account. You gotta write it all down.

My first bank account was Washington Mutual and I never had any problems with it. Free checking and they're super helpful on the phone.
I have bank of america now (because my sister transfers money over sometimes, if not I'd still be in wamu) and so far no problems. I'd recommend either of the 2 :)

What's awesome about banks nowadays is you can see your statements online so you can keep track of your money. I check my accounts every other day to make sure everything is kosher.

Wow! I'm impressed.

I don't have a credit card and that can cause problems.

How does that work for pay?

(Unless I'm being gullible and you just said that for the they comment, in which case I applaud you for fooling me so).

No, I'm serious. My work pay directly into Claires bank account which I have no connection with. I very rarely get cheques and when I do I can go to a cheque cashing shop, it costs a bit but that's just of of those things.

Then that is very impressive. Does it ever cause problems for you?

I guess you must do most stuff in cash. I'm pretty much the opposite, and I don't think alone in that pretty much the only person who gets cash off me is the barman - the rest is on a debit card.

Sorry, Subobisis, I'm not 'jacking your thread, just borrowing it for a few moments.
