Speaking of intros that we like, this is my all-time favorite:

However, there were a couple from Naruto: Shippuuden that I did not mind listening to over and over again.

Bah.
I was just getting into a manga only to find the people translating it dropped it three months ago, way before it was finished.
And there isn't a chance in hell it'll get released stateside, either. DX

I did see some of it, but, like a lot of people...I couldn't stand Shinji.
Plus, mindf**k (Evangelion, Boogiepop Phantom, Serial Experiments Lain) isn't really my genre.

Though it's definately not as good as the UC Gundam series, I have to admit that Gundam 00 really picked some catchy openings.
I've had the second one stuck in my head all day.

Well, it would depend on the genre's your most interested in, and what interests you the most about a series. Does a lot of action, and intense fighting scenes capture your attention? Do you like a heavy focus on character development? Do dark, mysterious series pull you in? Light bubbly ones? Calm, serene ones? Yada yada, etc. etc.?

Some of the most common anime's that'll be brought up are the classics, like Cowboy Bebop, Trigun, pretty much anything made by Hayao Miyazaki, all very good starting points.

I'd personally recommend Code Geass, because it gets a lot right and very little wrong. A lot of character development, a lot of action, interesting mech designs, a really enjoyable story, and a lot of interesting plot twist, including one of the most memorable ones I've ever seen. Some people are put off by the main character, Lelouch, though. They portray him as a bit of an anti-hero, but he takes it to the extreme a lot of the time (Which personally makes me like the series all the more). Basically, he wants to make a better world for his sister Nunally, and to find out who ordered his mother to be assassinated...Except, to do this, he manipulates and kills A LOT of people, both enemies and allies.

Gundam is pretty much THE mecha anime. If that's your interest, Zeta, 0080, and 08th MS team are all great places to start, and, aside from 08th MS Team, are pretty cheap now.

One last mech series that really isn't, FLAG is a great show. It takes a lot more realistic approach than Gundam, and focuses mostly on character and plot development. The story is set in a country experiencing a situation very similar to that in Iraq, and it's told in two parts, one from the viewpoint of a journalist who's following a group of soldiers, and the other is from the viewpoint of her friend, also a journalist, who's trying to figure out the events that are transpiring. A neat touch, the series is shown completely through viewfinders, as if it was a documentary being filmed. Some people found that to be annoying, though I found it really helped the feeling of realism and immersion that the series went for.

Azumanga Daioh is a great comedy series, I'd recommend it to anyone. It's also absurdly adorable, so keep that in mind.

Excel Saga is another great comedy, but it is definitely not for everybody. A lot of sex jokes, a lot of references to Japanese culture (still funny if you don't get them, and there are optional notes you can turn on for them), and all around absurd humor. Also, the last episode that is most certainly not for the squeamish. The creator of the anime wanted to see just how far he could take things, and it could not be aired in Japan.

Mushi-shi is a great artsy fantasy series that focuses completely around character development, despite there being only two characters who appear in more than one episode. It pulls it off incredibly well. There is almost NO action, however.

Death Note is a great shonen series, very dark with an absurd amount of plot twists and a lot of tension (I couldn't sleep after watching the last episode). Again, though, the series is definitely not for everyone. To call the protagonist an anti-hero would be SEVERLY understating how extreme his actions are in the series. Lelouch from Code Geass does a lot of killing, but he actually retains a conscience by the end of the first season (even if he often ignores it). Light Yagami, on the other hand, is a complete sociopath by the end of the series, and the series takes 'shades of grey' to its limits.

And, while it was not my cup of tea, Moribito appears to be getting a lot of good reviews, and is being recieved very well, so if fantasy is your thing, it's definately worth checking out.

This helped me find a lot of wonderful series.

Still missing a romance series, and a sports series...
But I haven't watched any of them, so I can't give my opinion on them.

..Yeah... XD

ANN doesn't actually show the series, but it gives you reviews, both number reviews from the members and professional reviews, along with summaries of the series.

However, sites like Hulu, Joost, Crunchyroll, and Funimation's site allow you to watch parts of series in the case of Funi's site and a few anime on the others, but also full series like all of Death Note on Hulu. Most of them have restrictions on who can watch though, so if you're not from the States, you may not be able to see much.

Romance: Onegai Teacher/Onegai Twins, 5 Centimeters Per Second, Ais**teruze Baby, Kanon

Sports: Slam Dunk! (basketball), Buzzer Beater (basketball), Prince Of Tennis (tennis, duh), Initial D (car racing/drifting), Capeta (go-kart racing), Eyeshield 21 (football), Captain Tsubasa (soccer), Aoki Densetsu Shoot (soccer)

I don't watch too much anime....shut up. :P

I haven't gotten around to finishing it since starting the series several months back but I highly recommend Planetes.

Isn't it Kanon? I've heard a lot of good things about that one too. Definately for moe fans, though.

Oooh! I've been thinking of picking that one up (not now, though. I still have Mushi-shi, Ghost in the Shell: SAC 2nd Gig and Gankutsuou to watch). From what I've heard, it's really good with presenting the technologies realistically...Which is a huge plus for me. What exactly did you think made the series, and were there any glaring problems?

Oh, and I forgot to add, for fans of hilariously bad series, go with M.D. Geist and Psychic Wars. You cannot take them seriously. XD

You're right it's Kanon, I was just going from memory so forgot the weird spelling. :P

I really liked the storyline and the character development, you always learned something new about each person in every episode. I think the concept stood out the most to me though, it was different than a lot of the anime out there and it was actually believable unlike most stories set in the future.

Speaking of, another anime that really had me blown away is The Place Promised In Our Early Days. I was a little disappointed at one part, but I don't want to spoil anything in case any of you watch it.

Yeah, I spelled Trigun 'Tri-Gun' yesterday, so...XD

Yep...Looks like I'm definitely picking Planetes up. While I love Gundam, I can easily nit pick just how unrealistic the designs for all the mechs are (I still love the MS-18E Kampfer, though...). I really love it when there's an actual attempt to make the world that's portrayed in a series realistic. That's actually one of the reasons I loved FLAG. The mech designs were slightly off, but there were more in line of what you'd expect a bipedal mech to work like: A lot of versatility, but slow, clunky, and maintenance heavy. They even went so far as to explain how such complex machines were piloted (a combination of physical controls and the use of electrodes to track brain signal and respond accordingly. They also actually mentioned that each one of the mechs had to be adjusted specifically to the pilot because of the differences in each persons brain). The only unrealistic part was that they could transform from a bipedal mode to a 4-wheeled vehicle mode, which at least made some sense since traveling in areas where a VTOL could not drop them off would be a b****.
