What it is is that we don't let people use Plime to drive traffic to their blogs, promote their websites or optimise their search engine ranking.

One of the things that makes Plime stand out is that we're after enriching other people's experience rather than trying to for personal or financial gain.

We've recently had a crackdown on people submitting spam and what we call splogs (spam+blog - geddit?) and as a result people who have created an account with the intention of spamming us end up in this thread and leave these slightly odd comments.

Why was this downvoted? Was it spam?

Most likely.
By the way, the fact alone that people are redirected to this thread and post here minutes or even seconds after they signed up indicates that the very first thing they tried to do was post a news link. One might argue that "legit" prospective members had lurked without making an account until they came across a story they wanted to share so badly that they had to sign up and post it immediately, but let's face it: That's more than unlikely.

I'm making an assumption, too, that it's spam. But when a seemingly legitimate comment is downvoted, it looks unwelcoming. If the comment is edited to indicate that it's spam, that makes for a better case for the downvote.
