Star with a zero :-(

Okay - so i have this other account and my little plime star has a zero in it. This basically prevents me from participating in forums/comments/discussions. It basically kills my enjoyable participation in plime for that account. is that not undermining the essence of this site? so what do i do? just create another account and in a sense my previous account is now a dead account - can anyone else see the inefficiency in this? perhaps the plime folks can find a remedy...

jaxomlotus would know for sure, as it's his site. You may try to private message him or wait till he makes it to this thread. My guess it's to prevent people from making multiple accounts just to upvote their own articles.

I'm curious as to why you would need two accounts, though.

Gives you motivation not to post anything else that would likely get you downvoted to a zero position, eh?

so i assume you have a crystal plime ball telling you exactly what plime users will ike and dislike and then you choose your posts accordingly?

or how about this - i'm a new user trying to get in the groove of plime and unknowingly re-post - then get reamed by plime world therefore resulting in a dead 'zero plime star' account? "welcome to plime - re-post - down voted - welcome to the pits of plime hell!"

that type of process will discourage users not encourage them - it's not the way to market the site...yeah - i've learned a lesson, but for those out there who have not learned and won't have the resolve to figure it out...what then? i'm simply bringing up a 'potential' hinderance to the usability of the site...maybe there's already a fix i don't know about, but i don't know...

i sent a message to jax...nuff said...

I think what he's saying is that he started a second account because his first account got downvoted enough he moved to level 0. At level 0, he's no longer being allowed to post comments, so he had to start a new account just to ask about what happened.

I'm guessing the dead account is darkryder. That user has submitted only 5 things, and the last three have been voted below zero. I PM'd him this morning with a few friendly (no, really) hints on forum threads he might want to check out to see why he kept getting downvoted. (The ones about posting links to your own blog.)

Not trying to call anyone out - just saying that if that's who this is, someone tried to be nice to him and help him know what was going wrong.

About Plime
Plime is an editable wiki community where users can add and edit weird and interesting links. Users earn karma when other users vote on their actions. The more karma you have, the more power you have at Plime.

What was the user name of your dead account?
plime folk may be able to let you know why you were down-voted to the 0 point.

By the way, I just wanted to add that your above post doesn't require a crystal ball to realize that it is subject to down-votes. A person doesn't usually walk into a party and make comments that may be construed as smart-assery after getting kicked out of the last party.
Unless your not here for the beer.

Well, that was nice of you to try and explain the situation to him.

Sounds like another argument for requiring a member to be level 2 before submitting article. Let's say there is an actual case where someone's very first submission is a duplicate. How many downvotes would it take to pretty much ban them? It doesn't look like the member you linked took too many downvotes.

I used to be pretty neutral to bloggers, but this is getting old, quick. Perhaps the first item in the FAQ should address potential members who only want to contribute to the site by linking to their blogs, merchandise, or ads.

Nope, but the concept is fairly simple. Don't post porn, your own blog, crappy ad-covered links, or obnoxious comments, and you should be fine. :)
We've been talking about creating an FAQ section. Maybe its time to get that up and running for the new users.
Oh, and don't say anything about religion, because then eeyore (not real name) will come running and waving his downvote button to tell you about all the nordic countries doing just fine without it.
Just kidding, eeyore ;)

I do not know what c1234 was downvoted for, but the way I read his post, he does not sound so smart-ass in the first place. A question like his problem hadn't come up to me before, but it is actually quite legitimate. The voting surely is an efficient way to to prevent trolling, but as c1234 says, it can turn one's membership into a one-way-road very quickly, even if you're not up to trolling. Messaging Jax might solve this current problem, but what if plime grows bigger and issues like this cannot be managed on the base of individual case decisions any more?

ok, now i'm thoroughly confused. as you may noticed i had to create a 3rd acct - why? i don't know. i posted this article:

and a few minutes after - my plime star was zero...again...even despite a positive comment and up-votes. can someone explain this to me? do the plime gods hate me? i'm not trying to be a jackass - i really think this is an issue...and no i am not the guy that was mentioned before...like i said, i emailed jax - my original acct is soar2k - if you check it you'll see my re-post...and the -65 plime flogging...

That is weird. Well, cheeselog1234 is back to level 1 now, so you could go back to using it if you want.

Anyone know how to check a user profile without a direct link to it? I thought I'd look at soar2k to see what I could see, but I can't figure out how.

Wow - you really did get kicked in the teeth there. Of course, that was under the old rating system, so it was probably only a few downvotes from very active users that added up to 65 points.

I think this is another nail in the "level 2 to submit items" argument. If your first post is a duplicate (which is more likely than not, since you probably wouldn't know the system well yet), this shows how you could pretty easily get bumped down from level 1 to level 0 based on that one mistake. It'd be a lot harder to get bumped from 2 to 0 on one post.

Don't know if it makes a difference or not, but Jax, my vote in this case would be to give poor Soar2k a clean slate (that is, back to level 1) and let cheeselog go back to using his/her original username.

I think we're missing something here.

This is Plime. By design, we have the ability to change the requirements.

You have to be a level 13 or higher (and I'm not sure who is all at that level except for Bornbad).

If I were a 13, I would go ahead and make the change....but I'm not.

So, Bornbad, if you read this - can you change the minimum requirements of creating a link to a "2"?

edited to add:

Bornbad, JaxomLotus, 2manyusernames, and TomPhoolry are all at 13 or above.

So any of those 4 can do it....

Do you really think we have enough of a critical mass here to warrant that kind of change? It should be discussed in it's own thread and unanimously approved (after thinking carefully of the repercussions first)

I do, but the masses may not agree with me.

I'll start a thread....

I don't think I've ever downvoted you.

Talking about religion is cool here. It looks like your problem is (was) that you don't want anyone to say anything negative about it.

I had to create a new account too. the old one (squirmster) was zeroed after I posted a link. The link got two votes up, I got one down and then I couldn't comment, add new links or anything, v. upset about losing my ability to partake.

I can't regain karma unless someone takes pity and votes up a poor zero, which they won't, because I can't add anything. Also, because I can't add comments I can't even create a new account to vote a comment up by my original name in the hope of getting to one.

There's definitely a flaw here, which I will correct.

For now, can you link to your "squirmster" account.
