Hair Talk

Ran across an article about ditching shampoo. Given the quantity of hair I have, and the price of shampoo, I was intrigued. I've always been one of those people who showers every day, shampoos every day, and conditions every day...Which results in about $150 a year in shampoo costs. I can distinctly recall when I started using shampoo (when I was a kid), and how my hair suddenly became dry and brittle, and the difference adding conditioner made, so all of this was like an 'aha' to me.

For the basics: No poo

I'm trying it out. Thus far...No complaints. Hair is soft, doesn't feel heavy.

Anyone else hear of/do this?

interesting ... though i should have known baking soda could also be used for this. my sister uses just baking soda to brush her teeth, and i've been using it to shave the bikini. much easier time with the blade.

i've been satisfied with my dimestore shampoo and conditioner, though i barely wash once a week. i rather leave it to get visibly oily before i wash - in my experience, that works like a natural pre-conditioner; after the wash, it's wonderfully thick and silky. very good results from using no-name dimestore shampoo and conditioner.

though, being a half-time college student with no job, it's probably easier for me to get away with just washing my hair once a week.

I've heard that you're not supposed to shampoo every day because it strips your hair of it's natural oils. I think I'm going to try this.

I've heard of it before. I've been told that with my hair, which is really long and very very curly, that I should try washing with only a conditioner and with a baking soda wash only once in a while. I haven't tried it yet. I'm scared that with the amount of product I use to keep my hair from frizzing that if I don't use shampoo then my hair won't get clean.

Heard of it. Thought about it. Not real sure what to think.

I've used citrus and vinegar on different occasions as an astringent on my hair.
Sure, it worked, no more gunk, but it smelled like vinegar or lemons.

I'll stick to the regular shampoo, thanks. My hair is healthy as it is.

I think you should all just shave it, personally.

Oh, wait... nevermind. I was talking about hair elsewhere.

I have read the link... it does have a lot of useful information and extensive troubleshooting tips for when things go awry...

At what point do you just feel like you are throwing everything in the fridge on your head?

My hair is actually pretty healthy. I'm getting back in the habit of getting it trimmed every 6-8 weeks, which helps a lot.

For me, it's more about a way to save money and reduce my environmental footprint. Bottles, and the chemicals going into the water...Ugh.

And don't worry, DEP, hair elsewhere is removed.

I shampoo my hair about 5 times a week and condition it about 3-4 times a week. It's pretty healthy, never feels too oily or too dry. I try to take good care of it.

Sounds like a personal problem to me. LOL

I do. My hair is curly so constantly shampooing it would make it frizz. I'll probably shampoo my hair now twice a month and condition it once a week.

I've alos noticed since I stopped shampooing my hair it grows faster, or maybe thats just me.

This is an interesting idea. I've used baking soda and peroxide to brush/whiten my teeth, but never thought of baking soda as a shampoo.

I know that during the winter, I wash my hair less frequently and it seems healthier. During the warm weather, though, it's everyday.

When I was a teenager, I used to wash my then waist long hair once a week. It was so healthy then.

I find that I'm using more and more expensive shampoos and conditioners lately and this may be a way to cut that down.

Great find!

I'll give it a try next time I almost run out of shampoo. I might test run it on husby's oily scalp first. :D

This sounds like a good idea, if you dont sweat. Your scalp naturally produces oil, (some of us more than others) and a build up of this oil just makes you look like a greasy, nasty mess.

I'm Greek. A lack of natural oils is NOT an issue I have ever had to deal with. It may work for some people, but I prefer to look clean. If your worried about the environment than buy in bulk and be sure to reuse and then recycle. Not that it matters, we're all gonna be wiped out in 2012 anyway...
