I have just begun a new trend. After downvoting a spam link, and commenting "please do not spam" I searched out a spam image and found the perfect image for the article.
It was really entertaining, and probably the best edit I have ever done.
Perhaps I'm bragging, and I admit that I am proud, but MAN, sometimes I'm a real a*****e.
I'm not sure that's a good idea. As an early adopter you're going to set a tone for what's acceptable in the community and what the culture here is. If you are rude to people, even annoying people, you may find that others feel more open about flaming new members with sarcasm.
Please note I'm not telling you to stop. I'm just voicing my opinion on the big picture effect.
[sidenote]I find it very hard to toe the line between "owner" and "user", as I find sometimes when I say things people take it as automatic site canon, and all I want to do is promote discussion amongst yourselves.[/sidenote]

Duly noted. You're probably right. All I have been doing, and I only just did it, is change the image to SPAM after first checking to see if it is indeed spam. I did this only to a repeat offender, and also commented "Please do not spam". Not a sarcastic or rude comment, just a clear "we don't like spam" comment. On one I went into slightly more detail saying "I keep checking the links, but it's still spam".
If I am out of line, I apologize. And I will discontinue doing so here on. I wasn't flaming new users, and really tried to make it clear that the problem was the self-linking.
Case in point, I just got this message (regarding your second comment listed above):
Jax,
I thought your site looked nice, but the vigilantes patrolling this place act like real jerks. I doubt if I'd stay here very long after all that.

No worries (though you might want to send the guy an apology).
Just keep in mind: Most blog spammers aren't "evil". They are webmasters (like myself) trying to build a site for themselves and can't afford to promote it through paid advertisements, so they resort to self promotion.
That's not to say what they are doing is cool or permissable here. Just keep in mind that they are people who are usually new to the site and don't know what is and isn't acceptable yet, but might be able to fit in quite nicely if treated with some dignity while being shown the ropes.

You're absolutely right. While it's definately cool to be called a vigilante, that was not my intent. I was trying to make sure they knew not to spam, but I probably was way meaner than I needed to be.
