« restlesschicken : i saw ben stein's documentary thing ... did he ever give the definition of intelligent design that the movie was going on? i'm assuming "ID" stands for intelligent design ...

i've read many conflicting definitions on intelligent design. i thought intelligent design was like self-guided evolution, but the popular definition seems to be about a higher intelligence designing life. the higher intelligence is heavily implied to be a great supernatural being.

so ... what is it?
No definition for ID, no definition for "Darwinism" or "Darwinists" even though these terms are used repeatedly, and no real evidence for ID, just mocking of evolution.

I mean, everyone knows the best way to make an argument is to mock the other side away to make your own look tough. Right?

28 minutes up the steep road on my bike. I'm guessing that 21 of those minutes involved me saying "I think I can I think I can" over and over and over.

4 minutes down.

By the time I began to think about my speed instead of how refreshing the cold breeze was on my hair, I began to skid sideways on the gravel at just the slightest tap of my breaks. I managed to slow myself a bit on some of the less steep sections, but the ride was scary.

And it only took a fraction of the time I spent toiling up.

For a nice TV-Watching snack you might want to try this: home-made cheese doodles. Put several handfuls of packing peanuts in a plastic bag along with the powdered "sauce" from a Kraft macaroni and cheese mix and 2 tsp salt. Shake well. Mmmmmmmm!

Does the move to advertising WOW on TV mean that it's officially done as a 'nerd' thing?

I started to reread an old favorite of mine: Animal Signals by John Maynard Smith and David Harper.
    On Page 6:
"Great Tits show off their belly stripe, which acts as a badge of status (e.g. Jrvi and Bakken 1984), in elaborate displays (e.g. Wilson 1992a)."

« chinook:How is it that one song can trigger such a strong memory? Boys of Summer (Henly) came up on my playlist, and it's pretty much left me in tears.

Not bad, just an unexpected extremely vivid memory.
It's almost good, I can hear voices and see faces and taste a kiss. But it still left me in tears. Better to have loved and lost, I guess.

Not really, no. Gamer culture is being aggressively co-opted, but so long as games still have Hard modes, it'll never be 'done' as a nerd retreat.

Non-gamers may join the game, they may play the game, but it's still our game, and we'll still beat the hell out of them at it.

On my way home from my birthday dinner with my bf, I was pulled over by a cop tonight. I turned into the gas station and stopped. It seems I didn't pull up far enough, so the cop went on the loud speaker ordering me to pull up. It was said twice, but I couldn't understand what he was saying till some of the people who were filling up their cars repeated what he said.

After doing so, he asked to see my license and registration. I was ordered out of my car and told to put my hands on the hood. Next thing I knew, I was patted down and my car was searched. He then went back to his car to look at my information.

Not more than 8 mins he came back and gave my information back and said "Thank you. We are done here."

There were about 20 cops on this one street. They have pulled over so many random cars, I'm beginning to think they were looking for someone.

Hell, I WAS speeding. It would've been an outrageous speeding ticket too. A 60 in a 45mph. I got lucky tonight.

This nice little experience was the conclusion to my birthday evening.

Generally, the only reason cops use loudspeakers instead of approaching your car is if they have reason to believe you may pose a danger to the officers involved.

Yeah, they were looking for someone very much more dangerous than you.

As you weren't that person, actually going through the process of ticketing you would have just wasted their time.

So which is considered the right thing to do? I was taught,in Colorado, that you DO NOT get out of the car. Period. Then I got pulled over in Wyoming and had the cop yell at me for not getting out and going back to his car. Then I got pulled over and had a gun drawn on me because I opened the door because my window was busted and wouldn't roll down.

SO which is it? Sit in the car and wait for the cop, go meet them, what?

Nunkii--they were totally looking for someone, most likely somebody who matched you description in some way, even if just gender or age. Can be scary, but glad that was all that happened!
